Wemby on another one of his side quests. 🗺️⚽️

Victor Wembanyama has never really fit into the mold of a typical NBA superstar, and Friday night in Katy, Texas was another perfect example of that. While most players spend their offseason in private workouts or exclusive gyms, Wemby casually showed up to a pickup soccer game and joined in like he was just another player. No big announcement. No cameras. Just a guy who genuinely loves the game of soccer.

That’s what makes Wemby so unique. He doesn’t seem interested in living the carefully scripted superstar lifestyle. If he wants to play chess in a park, he’ll do it. If he wants to sketch in New York, he’ll do it. If he wants to drive out to Katy and play pickup soccer with strangers, he’ll do that too. He follows his interests without worrying about what people expect from someone of his status, and that’s a big reason fans have gravitated toward him.

His love for soccer has always been obvious, and seeing him randomly pull up to a local game in Texas only reinforced it. For Wemby, it wasn’t about making headlines—it was simply about enjoying one of his favorite sports. In an era where so much feels calculated, he’s refreshing because he genuinely seems to live life on his own terms.

Wemby’s basketball IQ might honestly be the most underrated part of his game. Everyone focuses on the height, blocks and ridiculous highlights, but so many of his movements that might look awkward or “clumsy” at first are actually completely calculated. He’s constantly reading the ball, anticipating where the play is going and making split-second decisions—like pulling his hand away once he realizes the shot is already coming down to avoid a goaltend. For someone this young to already understand timing, angles and positioning at such a high level is scary. He isn’t just playing basketball like it’s a mini hoop because of his size—he’s thinking the game several steps ahead too. 🧠👽 by @kingwemby

Kyrie Irving remains the only player to consistently finish at the rim against Victor Wembanyama, doing what almost nobody else in the league has been able to accomplish against the NBA’s most intimidating shot blocker. His touch, body control, footwork, and ability to manipulate defenders in mid-air are simply on another level. Even with Wembanyama’s historic length waiting at the basket, Kyrie found a way to finish, proving once again why he’s one of the most skilled offensive players the game has ever seen. Victor Wembanyama’s off-the-dribble scoring is what separates him from almost every other big man in NBA history.

At over 7 feet tall, he moves like a guard with the ball in his hands. Whether it’s crossing defenders over, attacking off a hesitation, pulling up from three, or stopping on a dime for a midrange jumper, Wemby has a level of shot creation that’s almost unheard of for someone his size. His handle allows him to create his own offense instead of relying on others to set him up.

What makes him so dangerous is that defenders have no good answer. Give him space, and he’ll knock down the jumper. Crowd him, and he’ll blow by you or finish over the top with his incredible length. When Wembanyama gets into rhythm off the dribble, he’s one of the toughest players in the league to contain.
