Applications for our Fall 2026 Semester Program, partnered with @burrandburton Academy, open TODAY! Kinhaven offers the only semester music program in the nation, molding our unique collaborative model of chamber music-making with a dynamic, engaging academic experience at Burr and Burton. Fall 2026 will run from August 23-December 18, and will welcome up to 16 students to live, perform, and study with each other and our faculty on campus.

Kinhaven’s Semester Program provides a holistic educational experience for young high school-age musicians. A week in the life of a Semester Program student consists of academic courses in the mornings at BBA, followed by intensive coachings, lessons, and masterclasses during the afternoons and evenings at Kinhaven. Weekends are full with performances in different venues around Southern Vermont, oftentimes alongside celebrated artists from around the world.

We are thrilled to announce a special Brick Road Campaign, to support the continued renovation of our beloved Kinhaven campus. With your help, we will create an elegant and accessible pathway leading to the Concert Hall! This brick path will be permanently engraved with the names and memories of Kinhaven founders, students, artists, and community members.

As we approach our 75th anniversary in Summer 2027, this campaign offers a unique opportunity for more than seven decades of the Kinhaven community to be represented in a lasting way. Bricks may be personalized for individuals, families, cabins, ensembles, regatta teams, or to honor or memorialize loved ones - becoming a permanent part of the Kinhaven campus and paving the way for generations to come!

To reach our fundraising goals, we aim to sell at least 100 bricks by May 15, 2026 (Phase 1), and 250 bricks total by the end of the campaign. All donations are tax-deductible and directly support Kinhaven programs.

Our annual Composer’s Concert featured 11 premieres of works by students, all completed here at Kinhaven! There is no “composition” major at Kinhaven - almost all of these premieres were written by students who had no composing experience before, and were led by composer-in-residence Max Grafe to see their vision come to life.

It is particularly moving to see these performances in action - each musician on stage, whether composer or peer, has taken their fleeting bits of spare time to put together a truly meaningful and entirely personal musical experience.

When the weather is finally right, you gotta REGATTA!

After a slight rain delay, our yearly Regatta took place this Monday to a large crowd of faculty and staff spectators! Our teams were the Violins, Clarinellos, The Deep End, Percorbianos, and Flulalets - can you figure out which instruments were included in each group?

With some creative takes on boat-building, song-writing, and t-shirt design, it will be a close call who takes home regatta glory. We’ll find out tonight, after fierce deliberation from our judges! taken in Kinhaven Music School by @kinhavenmusic

This Sunday, our students had the opportunity to perform at the Landgrove Meeting House alongside Winter Olympian and Landgrove native Ben Ogden!

Ben is a two-time Olympic silver-medalist in cross-country skiing, and spoke to the audience of his experience growing up in this close-knit area of Southern Vermont, as well as his career as an athlete. Following Ben’s words, two student ensembles performed pieces from our Sunday concert, rounding out the “Celebration of Mountain Town Talent.”

We were thrilled and honored to be in a program alongside Ben, and at the Landgrove Meeting House, a place that has become a second home in our season of outreach performances!

This week, we are thrilled to welcome Guest Conductor Annunziata Tomaro to Kinhaven! Annunziata is leading our Symphonic Orchestra in Sibelius’ First Symphony, and our Chamber Orchestra in Rossini’s Overture to Barber of Seville.

Our student musicians are already hard at work on these contrasting pieces of repertoire - capturing the comedy and drama of opera, and coloring the lush landscape of the Finnish countryside. This Thursday, we are joined by composers and Kinhaven alumni Bruce Adolphe and Allen Shawn to lead a discussion and class with Composer-In-Residence Max Grafe!

Kinhaven is proud to have a strong and long-lasting tradition of composition. Each summer, we present a Student Composers’ Concert dedicated to the performance of our students’ chamber works. Students who complete a work can have it rehearsed by their peers, coached by our faculty composer-in-residence, and hear it performed live. Some students come in with a composition background, but most are beginning this process for the very first time!

An ode to Monday softball!

This afternoon tradition features Peter as the longstanding pitcher of each Kinhaven ball, watched by a crowd of engaged spectators - who may or may not be making friendship bracelets the entire time.

Our musicians are often surprised by their athletic capacity in this friendly sport! Today’s game is reported to be one for the ages - a nail-biting tie to almost the very end, with the winning team eking out a final run in the bottom of the last inning. Our MVP of the day was violist Madeleine, who saved her bases-loaded, two-outs team several times in a row! taken in Kinhaven Music School by @kinhavenmusic

Sunday’s program was a wide-ranging assortment of musical gems, from repertoire as early as Telemann’s Tafelmusik, to Haydn’s famous “Joke” quartet, onto Jaques Ibert’s flamenco-infused Deux Interludes, and Colin Brumby’s jazzy Suite for Four Double Basses - just to name a few!

We concluded with a triumphantly American icon of the classical canon: Aaron Copland’s Rodeo Suite. A work that can be at once rowdy and outrageous - with racing fiddle tunes taking turns with quirky wind solos - then turn around and offer the gentlest of pastoral scenes, reminiscent of the American plains.

In Maestro Simon Lipskar’s own words, this barn-shaking piece may be exactly what we need to commemorate the 250th Anniversary of the founding of this nation: a celebration, in vivid color, of what we are at our best, as well as a quieter contemplation and yearning for what we still could be.

Happy Independence Day Weekend, and conclusion to Week 2 of Kinhaven Senior Session. We can’t wait to see you next weekend!
