Time for another EA @skate trick tutorial… well, it’s less of a tutorial and more of a technical reclassification…

This time, we are learning about the Merlin Twist/Moulycopter.
To break it down, the trick is simply a Frontside 180 with a Front Foot Impossible.

Most people will only know this trick as a Merlin Twist. It was named by Cory Kennedy and heavily popularised during the mid 2000s thanks to the flawless switch execution in his video parts. However, the trick itself dates back to the early 90s and was likely first landed by ‘The Technician’, Alex Moul.

So where does the name Moulycopter come from? This name was dubbed by Master Lensman Leo Sharp. I have to agree that the name fits the trick perfectly, capturing that wild spinning motion whilst giving well deserved recognition to Alex.

Having separate names for a trick based on regular or switch stances has its challenges. What about Fakie and Nollie? I’ve tried to break it down in the video. Fakie works, but it kind of falls flat when we get to Nollie.

A Nollie Frontside 180 Front Foot Impossible is technically the same trick, but in writing only. The formation and execution are totally different from the other stances. If there were such a trick as a Nollie Merlin Flip, I would argue that it should be a Nollie Backside 180 with a Back Foot Impossible. This forms and executes the same way as a Merlin Flip, just rolling forwards.

It’s so easy to get bogged down in terminology. Whatever you want to call this trick, there is no denying how awesome it looks. Learn it in game, learn it in real life, or just watch in awe at the people who have mastered it.

Thanks for taking the time to read this far! If you would like to see how the man who quite possibly invented the trick does them, give @moulyalx a follow.

As always, if you have other real-world skateboard tricks you’d like me to cover, drop them in the comments!

Time for another EA @skate trick tutorial!

This time, we’re tackling the Body Jar, a classic trick invented by the legend himself, Christian Hosoi.
Known for his iconic style and his patented Hammerhead board shape, Hosoi also gave us the Christ Air and Judo Air.

So, what is a Body Jar?
Simply put, it is a Backside Nose Grab air to Tail Slap.
Right now, you can’t do a true Body Jar in game, but there is a workaround, hold a Nose Grab as long as possible, land in a slightly offset Tail Stall, and drop in immediately.

There are plenty of real world variations to this trick that you can also do in game:
Lien to Tail – A Frontside Nose Grab to Tail.
Sean Penn – A one footed Body Jar where you kick your front foot off the Heelside of the board during the Nose Grab. Named after Tony Hawk’s Madonna grab which is the same, but Frontside.
Cab Jar – A Caballerial (Fakie Backside 360) Nose Grab to Tail.
Gnar Jar – A Backside 540 Nose Grab to Tail.

Key Points
First, hit a transition with coping you can easily perform any stall trick on.

Second, practice low airs, rotating Backside to lock into a Tail Stall.

Third, boost a Nose Grab, keeping your height low enough to hit the coping.

Fourth, under rotate the 180 slightly. Through trial and error, you’ll find the perfect angle that doesn’t lock a Suski or a full Tail Stall, allowing you to drop straight back in.

It’s a tough one to get consistent as each ramp you try it on will vary in timing and micro adjustments to the rotation, but mastering this will unlock tons of tail slap variations!

Want to see how @christianhosoi does them in real life? Give him a follow.

Drop your requests for the next real world trick tutorial in the comments!

Time for another EA @skate trick tutorial!
This time, we are learning about the Bennett Grind.
Anyone familiar with this trick and/or Matt Bennett will know why it’s named after him. Although Matt was not the first skateboarder to do the trick, he definitely made it his own. So much so, in fact, that Thrasher Magazine came up with the name.

So, what exactly is a Bennett Grind, and what are the variations?
Purists will say a Bennett Grind is a Backside 180 into a Switch Backside Smith Grind. It can be done in your normal stance or switch (Switch Backside 180 into a regular Backside Smith Grind).
For me, I would also include Nollie, as you can Nollie Backside 180 into a Switch Backside Smith Grind.
I personally exclude Fakie for one main reason: to make the trick look the same as the other stances, you would have to do a Fakie Frontside 180 into a regular Backside Smith Grind. Although, there is an argument to be made that if it looks the same in its formation, it should be included.

Key Points
First, find a ledge or rail you want to practice this grind on.

Second, do a few backside 180s into grinds just to get a feel for letting the front truck connect first.

Third, figure out what tweak of the board works best for you. I find that tweaking backside while pushing the tail down locks into them perfectly. However, it is totally dependant on what ledge or rail I’m skating and how far I have to travel from popping to locking into the grind. Tweaking backside will speed up the rotation, while frontside will slow it down.

Finally, have fun experimenting with it! Flip in, flip out. Do them in and out of manuals, or throw them down massive rails and Hubbas!

Thanks for taking the time to read this far! If you would like to see how the man himself does them, give @matt_bennett__ a follow.

If you have other real world skateboard tricks you’d like me to cover, drop them in the comments!

I fell head over heels for skateboarding back in ‘97 and poured my heart into it for twenty-two years. But as the world moved toward lockdown and the subsequent stagnation of everyday life collided with years of injuries, it finally took its toll. It was a tough moment to realise that my best skating days were over.
The Skate franchise has been my rock since ‘07. It connects me to the kid I once was and the grown-up I am now. Even though I only get an hour a day to relive my youth, it’s the most precious hour of my day.
To me, it’s more than just a game; it’s a way to remember those twenty-two years of blood, sweat and concrete. I’m still here, still skating, just in a different way.
I wear the pumpkin head because the “me” from the past is still haunting the streets, even if the body had to stay behind.
So for now, I am Kinhead, my own love letter to skateboarding.

Time for a change of pace and a different format. This is my first EA Skate trick tutorial!

Today I’m teaching you The “Kinflip” AKA Disco Flip Revert, 360 Disco Flip or one of the many other regional names this trick has.

I chose Kinflip for three reasons…
One, I’m teaching it to you and it’s a play on my name.
Two, a Pumpkin is pretty much the opposite of a Grape, right? (Only the OG’s will get that reference) Big up Donovan Strain!
Three, why say more words than you have to!
So to break it down, it is a Heelflip, Backside Body Varial with an extra Backside Revert tacked onto the end. If you’ve got enough height, you can catch the trick and carry it all the way round in the air, but let’s face it, who doesn’t love that screech of urethane on concrete.

Key points:
First, learn Disco Flips. Just prewind a 180 and pop a Varial Heelflip. The board should spin perfectly straight whilst you 180 over the top.
Second, learn to Revert when landing. It’s easier to learn this as you try the trick, but learning a Reverted Backside 360 will help you.

It’s an incredibly fun trick to do, especially into manuals. Have fun with it and tag @kinhead in your skate edits of Kinflips!

And finally, If you have other real world skateboard tricks you’d like me to cover, drop them in the comments.

- BEHIND THE MASK -

Who are you when the audience leaves?

There’s a specific kind of exhaustion that comes from performing yourself. We all build masks designed to protect us, to help us fit into spaces that weren’t built for the unfiltered self, or just to navigate a world that demands conformity. They serve a purpose. They keep us safe.

Hyper-vigilance is a heavy weight to carry into every single room you enter. If you leave the mask on for too long, the lines blur between the character you’re playing and the person underneath.

Unmasking isn’t a single, dramatic reveal. It’s a slow, often uncomfortable process of letting the armour crack so you can finally catch your breath. The most radical thing you can do is decide that the cost of fitting in is getting too high, and allow yourself to be seen.

It takes an immense amount of energy to keep the façade held high. It takes even more courage to put it down, even if just for a second. Find the spaces where you can finally take a breath.

Taking off the mask doesn’t mean the end of Kinhead. It just means sometimes, a breath of fresh air is needed.
