2026 Friends and Family Trip 🛣️

Following Prescott College’s 60th anniversary celebration in Arizona, nine alumni and donors headed to Kino for a Friends and Family camping adventure on Isla Tiburón, joined by seven Center staff and community members.

We hiked, snorkeled, marveled at leaping dolphins, slept under the stars, and contemplated songs and stories shared with us about Comcaac history and culture. It was a wonderful opportunity to reconnect, build new friendships, and celebrate our connections to this extraordinary place!

Our Marine Mammal Program researchers, Gaby and Héctor conduct weekly surveys of the area for cetaceans, using a technique called photo-identification to recognize individual animals by unique features and markings on their dorsal or tail fins. These distinctive marks provide valuable information like how long each animal stays in the region and its life history.
🐬
A dolphin known as “Boomerang” has been identified by Gaby and Hector since 2022. Its name comes from its distinctive dorsal fin, whose shape is thin and curved like a boomerang. This unique feature makes Boomerang a point of reference and helps researchers identify its pod during monitoring sessions.

Every dolphin has a story to tell, and these details help us better understand the region and support conservation efforts in the Midriff Island Region of the Gulf of California.

Photography is a powerful conservation tool that grants us a glimpse into the priority habitats of the Gulf of California, the species that inhabit them, and the work we do here at the Center to help protect them.

While most of our team consists of talented photographers, the Media and Communication Program specifically aims to not only capture excellent images, but to leverage them in attractive communication products. By doing so, we hope to deepen understanding of the complex themes of the Center's work, promote multicultural collaboration, and open spaces for dialogue that encourage critical thinking, effective expression, and collective action.

Guided tour of the Center with visitors from the Friends & Family trip, Prescott College students, members of the Comcaac nation, Center staff, and visiting researchers - over 50 attendees total!

We offer these tours to visiting groups to educate them about our work and biocultural context, presented directly by the staff and community members who help make it all happen.

This guided tour featured a special intro presented by Aaron Barnett and Betina Romero of the Comcaac nation, who sung their traditional welcome song for us.

“This welcome song speaks precisely about moments like these, where people from different origins and backgrounds come together and experience a moment of harmony and mutual respect,” says Aaron.

The Kino Bay Center takes Prescott College - again! 🌲

Last week our Executive Director, Lorayne Meltzer, and our Media and Communications Coordinator, Andy Galindo, went up to Prescott to celebrate Prescott College's 60th anniversary.

We had the pleasure of reimagining our photography exhibition, Naturaleza y Territorio, for a third time to serve as the informative backdrop for Lorayne's presentation of the Center's roots and their influence on the work we do today.

Thanks so much to the Prescott College family for giving us this space to share our work and including us in all the festivities.

Here's to 60 more years! 🎊

Keep the celebration going after the 60th Anniversary by joining us for the Kino Bay Friends and Family Trip, October 19 to 24!

On this six-day trip to the Prescott College Kino Bay Center, participants will explore the Center, experience the Gulf of California's biocultural diversity, and enjoy a three-day, two-night camping adventure on Tiburón Island. Alternative activities will be available for those who prefer not to camp.

This special experience offers an opportunity to reconnect with fellow alumni and friends, learn about the Kino Bay Center’s work in experiential education, science, and community-based conservation, and rediscover the Prescott College approach to learning through shared adventure, direct experience, and meaningful engagement with people and place.

A van will leave Prescott on the 19th and can make pickup stops in Phoenix, Tucson, and Hermosillo on its way to Kino; it will return to Prescott on the 24th.

Contact Ana Martinez (ana.martinez@prescott.edu) to sign up. See you there!
