Anamcara and Phoenix: Two One Acts - opens in exactly a week!
these are two one acts i wrote in quite literally the most transitional point of my life, an area where i wasn’t sure how to become who i wanted to be, or how to show up as that person for people around me.

Anamcara means ‘soul friend’ and it’s about those exact relationships, which for me is with @christophercast123 - my best friend. The main characters Max and Nathan are both struggling immensely but still trying to be close to each other without destroying themselves. Writing it was my way of figuring that out, plus a means of expressing how much Chris means to me.

Phoenix is named after the bird, because it was written at a time I was watching my old self disintegrate and a new self emerge as I transitioned into a man. The thing is, this wasn’t as pretty as that sounds, and there was a lot of really terrible and mean things that I felt about myself in the process. More than that, a lot of fear. Margaret, the main character, is working through all of that.

They both have many heartbreaking, hopeful, and also funny moments! We’ve all been working very hard on it and would love for you to see it!

Margaret and Mark are starting a new life after a move, but at the same time are coming to the end of their marriage. Margaret struggles to cope with their insufferable relationship, along with an identity crisis that has been creeping up on her for years.

She has been pretending to have moved on from a transition in her teens, one that she was too scared to see the end of. It all piles up, until it’s almost too much to bear.

PHOENIX tells the story of a past meeting with the present, and a future that begs someone to stay true to themselves.

Nathan and Max have been best friends for years, but the friendship suddenly ends when Max decides to take his own life.

Nathan is grieving the tremendous loss—but little does he know the last time he saw his friend wasn’t the last time after all. Max returns to take care of unfinished business, or rather—for Nathan to take care of it for him.

ANAMCARA is a play that explores where one person begins and one person ends in a friendship, and how much we can take care of each other before destroying ourselves.
