Serious stuff and goofy stuff at The Royal Children's Hospital for Book Week today. In the morning I spoke to teens about writing through depression and the childhood reasons behind my fear of the sea. In the afternoon I was a guest on Starlight TV with Captain Adventure. We spoke about my magical creature Buffel (you can see him peeking from my arm) and watched the parade of kids (and staff!) dressed up for "Book an Adventure".I saw the best kids and the best carers today.Unforgettable. My writer-dream has always been to appear at Words in Winter, and here I am! I'll be talking about how magical stories set in a heartbreaking world of racism still need the occasional fart joke. If we can't see the light through the darkness, then who are we? Pretty boring, probably. Plus I'm giving out the children's awards! Rainy day in Sydney for @premiersreadingchallengensw where I read the first chapters of Kip of the Mountain and Kip of the Karoo. It's for the BOOK BITES podcast that goes out to every school in NSW. My episode is up today!I wanted to sound like Emma Thompson in the studio but I ended up sounding like a nervous Emma Gourlay, and that was cool too. Endless appreciation to Jade Arnold (at the end of the reel!) for coaching me through the session, she and the team are doing tremendous things for children's literacy and Australian authors. I was born in Scoresby so couldn't resist bringing my PROOF I'M FROM THE NEIGHBOURHOOD photo to Dymocks Knox (I'm in my Scoresby Heights Primary School uniform getting the "Aussie of the Month" award.) Me, cheesy? Always. But I couldn't resist one of those "full circle" moments that writers love. Thank you to Mia and Emily for having me. Went to Sydney, did lots, posted zero (except for that horse video!) but my best keepsake is this gorgeous illustration by @jadey.draws which is waiting for a frame. My toddler is crying angry tears because I told her it's a looking thing, not a playing thing, and I am crying happy tears because I love it and Jade drew it for me. Thank you. You are so talented x by @kipofthemountain

Arrived in Sydney today for Halloween events and cool things, but this doggy in the window absolutely made my day. I took a couple quick pics and kept walking. He looked too wistful to be disturbed! by @kipofthemountain
