A Pair of Aces got me. Not in the way I expected either.

I loved both characters, the story kept me locked in, but Euniece? The weight she’s carrying (career, family, child, ambition, all of it at once) 😥. I can’t say I agreed with every choice she made.

But I overstood the desire.

The desire to live in the AND.
Wife AND mom AND lawyer AND prosecutor AND protector AND defender AND…

That desire is common. Especially for women who were never going to be fulfilled by “just” family life, and get made to feel guilty for wanting more than that.

I related to her hard. Got frustrated with her, angry with her, sad for her family and sad for her, all in the same chapter sometimes.

Overall… great book. Complex characters, an intriguing case, deep themes.

But Euniece ended up being a mirror for me in 2026. We’re fighting the same fight women were fighting back then.

Same fight, different decade.

Anyone else read this and see themselves a little too clearly?

You’re in the car. Still in your church clothes. The service was good, the worship was real, the word was even better… God showed up.

But you’re driving home and something in you is quiet in a way that has nothing to do with peace.

You sang every word this morning and did every dance. And somehow you still spent the whole service feeling like nobody in that building actually saw you.

Chosen. And invisible at the same time.

You don’t have a name for it. You’d never say it out loud. Because how do you explain that you love God completely and still drive home from his house feeling like a stranger?

That’s the feeling I’m writing about.

That person in the car… still in her Sunday best, still loving God, still not quite sure where she fits in the story everybody else seems to know by heart.

I’m writing for her.

📚 AUGUST BOOK CLUB PICK 📚

The Revelation of Dionne Daphné by Mara Brock Akil

As soon as I saw who wrote this, I was intrigued.

Many of us know Mara Brock Akil as the creator behind some of the most iconic Black television stories of our generation, and now I’m excited to experience her voice on the page.

This novel follows Dionne Daphné as she embarks on a journey of self-discovery, confronting questions about identity, family, love, purpose, and the stories we’ve been told about ourselves. Set against a backdrop of ambition, relationships, and personal transformation, it promises to be both thought-provoking and emotionally rich.

I don’t know exactly where this story is going to take us, but I have a feeling it’s going to spark some incredible conversations.

If you’ve been looking for a character-driven story about becoming, healing, and discovering who you really are, this might be the one.

I’m going to be honest with you. 🖤

I hit 20,000 words and something shifted. The fire I had writing those first thousand words, that urgency, that can’t-stop-won’t-stop energy… it got quiet on me.

So I did something I said I couldn’t do. I let myself read again.

Finished Pair of Aces. Working through The Great Man. Have Bracket Kills waiting for me next. And somewhere between the pages of somebody else’s story, mine started calling again.

Right now I’m not writing because the words are flowing perfectly so I’m writing to build the habit. To show up. To keep my character company even when the scene isn’t singing yet.

And that’s okay. First drafts aren’t supposed to be perfect. They’re supposed to exist.

20,000 words and still going. 🖤

Made it to Bound & Lettered at Our House on 48th Street, and it did not disappoint. 📚✨

I had the best time. It was my first time there, and honestly, I’ve been wanting to visit for a long time. I’m so glad to finally make it because the events they curate always look incredible.

If you don’t know about Our House on 48th Street, you are truly missing out. It’s more than a space—it’s a co-working space, an event space, and a true community space.

Huge shoutout to @destinymuse for creating something so special. She has built an amazing hub that brings people, art, books, and community together in such an intentional way.

And this was only the beginning for us. Bound & Lettered was our first event there, but it definitely won’t be our last.
