Falls Bridge …….

#phl_shooters #blackandwhite #urbexphotography #bnw #bridges

The bridge we see today was constructed in 1894–95. It’s a steel Baltimore (Petit) through-truss, a strengthened variation of the Pratt truss. Its stone piers and enormous steel framework were designed to carry considerably more than the traffic you see on it today.

And that’s because of one of the most interesting things about Falls Bridge:

It was supposed to have two levels.

The massive steel structure was designed to support an upper roadway above the roadway that exists today. The approaches would have carried traffic onto that second deck from higher ground on both sides of the Schuylkill.

But the city never constructed the upper deck. The lower portion alone reportedly cost about $262,000, consuming most of the roughly $300,000 allocated for the project, and the upper approaches would also have required expensive property acquisition.

That’s why Falls Bridge looks unusually tall and heavily built for a relatively narrow two-lane roadway—the steelwork above you was intended to help support another entire level. taken in Fairmount Park, Philly by @kirbyfleischman
