Kirsten Milenko — Open Studio / Ambisonic Listening Event

Kirsten Milenko (AUS/FR) has been working in the Dirty Deal Audio ambisonics studio at Laidi Palace Residency on a new piece featuring samples from recordings of two sopranos, Béatrice de Larragoïti and Margaux de Valensart. The work is conceived as a requiem for wild places and forests.

Kirsten Milenkois a composer and writer drawn to the red threads between destinations and counterpoint. In her music, she constantly seeks to extend the listener’s perception of time beyond the duration of the music itself. Her ethos is to draw the listener deeper into a space between spaces, allowing the after-listening to become brighter, slower and more vibrant.

The residency is part of an immersive audio programme launched by the French Institute in Latvia in collaboration with Dirty Deal Audio to mark the Institute’s 30th anniversary in Latvia. Dedicated to French contemporary composers, sound artists, producers, sound designers and other professionals experienced in spatial sound, the programme supports the creation and exchange of immersive and experimental music, with a particular focus on ambisonic spatial audio.

Caeli is a work inspired by reading Peter Wohlleben’s book The Hidden Life of Trees. It is composed by fusing the techniques of early music / musique concrète to take excerpts of plainchant and set them in a way that mimics the movements of light through a forest from the perspective of an observer seeing both the majesty and fragility of trees in our world today.

Forests connect us to centuries past, and so the connection of contemporary to ancient musical technique is the material that seemed most appropriate and inspiring to set the story of forestry and our connection to it today. It asks the question – if a forest could speak, what would it tell us and what could we say in return? taken in Théâtre du Temps by @kirstenmilenko
