POSTS STORIES REELS

Is there any better way to celebrate spooky season than by curling up with a scary story?

...What about *thirteen* short stories from some of the most celebrated late 19th- and early 20th-century horror and supernatural writers - including Bram Stoker, H.P. Lovecraft and Edith Wharton?

Thirteen Terrifying Tales is a classic horror and ghost story anthology published by Bodleian Library Publishing. This beautifully bound collection gathers a painstakingly curated vintage selection of bone-chilling tales. Featuring murder, obsession and, uh, curse-bearing caterpillars. From grand houses and deserted churches to seaside resorts and inner-city courtyards, these stories tap into one of our oldest fears: the unknown. by @kirstylogan

Important conversations on the challenges and joys of queer mother and parenthood. Clunky terminology, recognition and the lack of it from family, the motivations to share these experiences in writing.

Opened with a moving poem from Maria Jastrzębska @maria.jastrzebska.35

"I honestly had no clue how queer families had children. Even when I started to look at it everything is written for heteronormative couples. There's a lot to decipher. I wanted to create something to make it easier for queer people, that would make it less overwhelming, confusing and lonely - Kirsty Loher

"I grew up with two aunts who were together and had children. In my childhood I just took it for granted that it was possible to do that. I realised that a lot of people didn't have that experience." - Jessica by @kirstylogan

A ghost is so much more than a spectral figure shouting boo!: it can be a comfort, a threat, a reminder, a thrill, a sadness, a warning. Every human culture has its own version of a ghost story. So what keeps us coming back to these timeless tales? This spooky season, you can learn how to take the familiar world around you – a house, a street, a hotel room, a hospital corridor – and twist it into something memorable and strange. By digging deep into your own fears, then choosing and using the perfect sensory detail, you'll learn how to get beneath a reader's skin and give them a new twist on our most ancient stories.

Your tutor @kirstylogan (writer and presenter of BBC Radio's A History of Ghosts and horror collections including Things We Say in the Dark) will guide you through these questions and more. Through writing examples, group discussion and individual writing exercises, she'll help you explore what makes a ghost truly scary, what a haunting might reveal about a place or a person, and how to craft the perfect setting to make your reader wonder what, exactly, is living – or not-living – beside them.

Book to join us on 19th October via the events page on our website (link in bio) now!

This event is being run in collaboration with @bookaidinternational with proceeds from ticket sales going towards the brilliant work they do!

🛟Obsess, Obsesses, Obsessed, Obsessing🛟

Desire, fixation, dependency – where do they blur, and what do they reveal? We’re thrilled to see powerful writer and theatre-maker Ray Filar (@itsthat_ray) join this already obsessing line up! Ray joins Sophie Robinson (@sophiepoetry), Lauren J. Joseph @lauren_j_joseph) and Kirsty Logan (@kirstylogan) , for a conversation on obsession and addiction in contemporary queer writing, chaired by founder of the Queer Girls Book Club (@queergirlsbookclub), Ayse Huseyin.

Provocative, intimate and deeply human, this session invites you to consider what it means to want too much — and what it might cost.

Write Your Own Memoir at the Boswell Book Festival

Is your life story begging to be told?

Do you have a unique story, concept, or perspective that needs sharing?

Have you already started writing your memoir, only to find that it could do with a sprinkle of inspiration or some guidance from an expert writer?

If the answer to any of these questions is a resounding yes, then we have some great solutions for you!

Firstly – where and how do you start? One way forward is to join acclaimed author and Memoirist Kirsty Logan for her workshop, “Writing Memoir: Where to Start and Where to End.”

Through writing examples, group discussion and individual writing exercises, @kirstylogan will help you to pull your story out from the messy web of experiences and encounters, how to draw out key themes and messages, what to include and what to leave out, and what the reader does and doesn't need to be told.

Secondly – for those aspiring writers who are worried about the ethics of truthtelling in a public arena, we have a literary polymath on hand to help you navigate these ethical minefields.

Blake Morrison’s exemplary Memoir, “And When Did You Last See Your Father?” helped to define the genre with its honesty, clarity and emotional force. His illuminating new book "On Memoir", shares the precious wisdoms that he has gleaned from a lifetime of reading, creating, and teaching in one of our favourite literary artforms, and there are lessons for writers and readers alike as he explores the personal and political in timely topics that range from AI and social media, love and sex, oversharing and trauma.
