The Delicacy of Invasive Machines

In this KISDtalk, Nelly-Eve Rajotte explores how technologies such as surgical robotics, LiDAR scanning, biometric sensors and artificial intelligence can be repurposed to create imagery from the perspective of the living world. By transforming devices originally designed for measurement and control, she explores new forms of presence, otherness and sensory experience.

Presenting her recent works The Trees Communicate with Each Other at 220 Hertz and Matter (2024), In the Depths of Flesh, the Delicacy of Invasive Machines (2025), she examines how non-human perspectives and machine-generated visions of landscapes can create immersive and empathetic experiences.

@nellyeverajotte
is an artist and professor at UQAM's School of Design in Montreal, where she researches moving image and sound design. Her immersive installations and performances explore non-human ways of seeing, using technologies including LiDAR, biosensors, AI and robotics.

Her work has been presented at the Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal, Contemporary Calgary, MUTEK, transmediale Berlin, ISEA and KIKK Festival, among others, and is held in several public collections.

Thank you @slanted_publishers for letting me contribute an essay about the competence to deal with simulteinities for the Experimental Type 4.0 book just released now. I used a project outline from last year “No Time Is Now” - a type n’tech lab I teached with @didi3gogo from Unam, MX for 56 students from @codeandcontext and @kisdesign to write about it.. In a world of social bubbles, immediate gratification and geopolitical upheaval, sound in art, design and performance can help establish new ways of acknowledging the 'other', a first step towards a renewed mutuality. In this session, Marco will present his latest series of works, “I Am Your Body,” an ongoing collection of performances and installations that leverage grassroots research to explore Deaf perception of sound as a means for new artistic aesthetics. Computational and prosthetic technology plays a crucial role in these works, but rather than being passive media, they are subverted and transformed into machines that act as new organs for a shared perception. A talk will be followed by an open conversation and demo of some of Marco's bespoke biomachines.

Marco Donnarumma is an artist working with the human body, technology, and sound. His performances, installations, music, and films explore the intersections of contemporary performance, art, and technology. Combining artistic practice with expertise in engineering, computing, and robotics, he creates AI-, biosensor-, and prosthetic-based machines that transform the body into a site of resistance and change.

KISDtalk mit Marco Donnarumma im Un-Label Studio

Am 9. Oktober 2026 ist der international bekannte Künstler und Forscher Marco Donnarumma bei Un-Label zu Gast. In seinem Vortrag „Flesh Technology: Performative Körper und Maschinen für neue Formen des Miteinanders“ spricht er über das Zusammenspiel von Körper, Klang und Technologie.

Marco stellt seine aktuelle Werkreihe I Am Your Body vor. Darin beschäftigt er sich mit der Frage, wie Taube Menschen Klang wahrnehmen – und welche neuen künstlerischen Ausdrucksformen daraus entstehen können. Computerbasierte und prothetische Technologien werden dabei zu „Biomaschinen“, die wie neue Organe einer gemeinsamen Wahrnehmung funktionieren.

Nach dem Vortrag gibt es Zeit für ein offenes Gespräch und eine Live-Demonstration einiger von Marco entwickelter Biomaschinen.

Wie wird ein Platz zu einem Ort, an dem Erinnerung, Alltag und Stadtkultur zusammenkommen?

Wir sind eine Gruppe Studierender der KISD und zeigen euch mit unserem Projekt „Karl. Küpper. Platz?“ unsere Ideen für die Zukunft des Karl-Küpper-Platzes, direkt vor Ort!

Karl Küpper (1905–1970) widersetzte sich als Kölner Büttenredner mit Humor und Sprache offen dem NS-Regime. Seit 15 Jahren trägt der Platz seinen Namen. Doch seine Geschichte bleibt dort für viele unsichtbar.
Wie könnte sich das ändern? Wir haben recherchiert, den Platz untersucht und Gespräche geführt. Im Austausch mit Küppers Familie und Akteur*innen aus Stadt, Kultur, Karneval und Geschichtsforschung haben wir neue Perspektiven entwickelt: für einen lebendigen Treffpunkt, der Erinnerung und Nachbarschaft verbindet und politischem, gesellschaftskritischem Karneval Raum gibt.

Kommt vorbei, entdeckt unsere Entwürfe und diskutiert mit uns über die Zukunft des Platzes!

How do crises shape our cultural memory – and what role does time play in this?

The workshop “Temporalities: Dynamics of the Culture of Remembrance in Times of Crisis” explores current debates on temporality in crisis research and the culture of remembrance. It looks at how different experiences and concepts of time shape the ways crises are remembered, interpreted and negotiated.

KISD Parcours - a recap!

For three days at the end of July, KISD was taken over by our student‘s final projects, ideas and experiments.

Studios, corridors and courtyards became exhibition spaces for more than 70 Bachelor’s and Master’s projects from Integrated Design, alongside numerous other student projects.

With the new GradShow, international guests and a packed programme, there was even more to discover, discuss and celebrate this year.

None of this happens by itself. So a huge thank-you goes to the entire Parcours team supervised by Prof. Philip Heidkamp and all the helpers who planned, organised, set up, coordinated, supported, improvised and made KISDparcours 2026 possible.

You did a great job! 💛

How can a board game be designed so that blind, visually impaired and sighted people can play together on equal terms?

KISD graduate Chiara Heiligensetzer explored this question in her bachelor’s project “FÜHLEN” – and has now received an iF Design Student Award @ifdesign.
The project was developed with the support of Prof. Lasse Scherffig and Dr Philipp Bojahr @colognegamelab

With tactile surfaces, haptic tasks, Braille, standard print and NFC-based audio descriptions, the game creates an inclusive and engaging playing experience.

The jury praised it as a potential benchmark for inclusive board game design.

An diesem Wochenende verwandeln sich die Räume der Köln International School of Design (@kisdesign) in eine große Ausstellungsfläche. Bei der diesjährigen Abschlussausstellung zeigen mehr als 70 junge Gestalter*innen ihre Bachelor- und Masterprojekte.

Zu sehen bekommt ihr unter anderem:
Die Kfz-Verbandtasche: Gemeinsam mit Rettungssanitäter*innen hat Marco Struck den Kfz-Verbandskasten als intuitives Notfallwerkzeug neu gestaltet. Die Tasche priorisiert die Struktur der lebensrettenden Maßnahmen, führt die Nutzer*innen durch kritische Situationen und ermöglicht ein schnelleres und sichereres Handeln.

Alumie – die weltweit erste modulare Zahnbürste. Wie eine Aluminiumtaschenlampe aufgebaut, lässt sich dieses elektrische Gerät von Till Beyer leicht öffnen und kann so einfach repariert, aufgerüstet oder an die Bedürfnisse der Nutzer*innen angepasst werden. Zum Einsatz kommen recyceltes Aluminium und ein upgecycelter E-Bike-Akku.

Zwischen den Vorhängen: Emilie Starch Bendsen untersucht in ihrem Projekt, wie mehrlagige Vorhänge als sanfte Raumteiler fungieren können, um in den Patient*innenzimmern eines Krankenhauses intime und zugleich durchlässige Bereiche zu schaffen. Sie präsentiert eine Innenraumgestaltung, die Konflikte hinsichtlich der räumlichen Aufteilung ausgleicht.

Anders arbeiten: Diese Abschlussarbeit hinterfragt Effizienz und Produktivität als vorherrschende Werte in der grafischen Designpraxis. Beatriz Simões vertritt dabei die These, dass Werkzeuge als aktive Akteure betrachtet werden können, die die Ideenfindung beeinflussen.

Silver Nail at the ADC Talent Award for KISD graduate Max Iris

At this year’s ADC Talent Award, Max Iris @maaax.iris was honoured with a Silver Nail. Through this annual competition, the Art Directors Club of Germany recognises the best semester and final projects in the fields of design and communication.

The award was given for his photographic final project “Millions To-Go”, which translates the subjective perception of the modern metropolis into a visual stream. The work brings together photographs and typographic text fragments from the urban landscape, which merge into an associative flow of images through sequencing and montage.

A showcase of all submitted works is available in the ADC Gallery.
