In the early 1900s, Gijiu Kitazawa came to California with a passion for seeds and a dream to share the vegetables of Japan with a new generation of growers. 🌱

In this photo, Gijiu and his brother Buemon stand in front of the original Kitazawa Seed Company storefront in San Jose, California.

Over the years, Kitazawa Seed Company has endured challenges, including the forced closure of the business during World War II. Yet through resilience and community, the company persevered, growing from a small local shop to a mail-order business, and now, an online store serving gardeners across the world.

We still use the same green-ink and manila seed packet look that Gijiu designed more than a century ago, honoring the legacy that started it all. 💚

Ever noticed that spicy shaker at Japanese restaurants? It’s not just chili powder - it’s Shichimi Togarashi, a bold seven-spice blend that adds heat and depth to noodles, soups, and grilled dishes.

One of its key ingredients is the Yatsufusa pepper, a compact plant perfect for containers, raised beds, or even indoor growing.
These peppers grow upright in clusters, reaching 2–3 feet tall, and pack a punch with 50,000–75,000 Scoville units. The hotter the climate, the spicier they get! Dry them, remove the seeds, and grind into flakes or powder for a fiery topping on rice or ramen

Seed saving is one of the most rewarding parts of gardening!

We planted Heshiko Japanese bunching onions last spring, and they’ve been incredible...cold-hardy, overwintered beautifully, and now flowering. Instead of pulling them out, we let the flowers dry right on the plant so they could produce seeds.

Why? Because saving seeds from heirloom varieties like these helps preserve their unique traits and adapt them to your local growing conditions. Plus, it means we get to grow them again next season and share the goodness with friends and family!

Find this heirloom variety and many more at Kitazawaseed.com, your go-to for Asian seeds!
