I used the 4x5 camera for the first time on Saturday morning. I took 4 exposures with Emma at Garden of the Gods, developed them once I got home, and then made negative scans. It was so much fun and I can't wait to learn more about this craft. •

Assembling my 4x5 camera in 2 minutes. I've spent the last 3 months working on almost nothing other than this project, and today I was able to assemble it and consider it complete. More details to come!

Applying the first coat of shellac to the camera. I started with a thick coat of 2lb shellac, followed by some steel wool, and then 2 more coats of 1lb shellac. I plan to rub it out a bit with some paste wax and steel wool to get to a more satin finish for the final look.

All of the internal parts of the camera have to be painted black to avoid reflections when a picture is taken. I decided to use pitch black milk paint, and it worked great. This was my first time using milk paint, and it was easy to apply and clean up. Definitely going to be using this on more things in the future.

Working with brass has been fun. It requires a similar mindset that hand tool woodworking does. Just slowly removing material up to a scored line and taking lighter and lighter passes with a fine tool until the final dimension is reached. These are two of my first pieces: the lens board lock for the 4x5 camera. I'm excited to see how they polish up and how they work when they're mounted up to the front frame. •

Anyone have a favorite finish for Sapele?
I'm getting some test pieces ready, but I'm thinking I'll do a coat of Tung oil, blonde shellac to seal it, and a top coat of water based lacquer. •

Cutting the slots for the miter splines on the standards for my 4x5 camera. The standards support the camera frames and allow for all of the camera movements (like tilt, shift, or swing) that make large format photography special. The splines add a nice detail, but also greatly improve the strength of the joint. I wanted to use miters to have a consistent design element that matches the mitered frames, but the strength is almost entirely from these splines. by @kitelakewoodworking

I'm using a combination of hand tools and power tools for my camera project. This is my first time placing a big emphasis on using hand tools and trying to really focus on precision. It's been going well so far, but hasn't been without mistakes. I'm using a hand saw to cut the miters, followed by fine tuning them with the shooting board. I did this to reduce the chance of tear out during the cut and to make the kerf as small as possible since the frames will have continuous grain all the way around. Last night, I trimmed a bit too much off of a piece and will have to make a different one... Little disappointing, but I'm trying to be better about having realistic expectations for myself and pushing toward a completed project rather than absolute perfection.

Sawing out the cut out of the inner plywood frames for the 4x5 camera. These will get cleaned up soon with a flush trim bit at the router table. •

I use Solidworks to design most things that have any significant complexity, but I almost always sketch it out - both as I'm designing in CAD and also before I actually start building. I don't usually take the time to make 2D drawings with my models, so sketching it on paper helps me understand how to make each part and put it all together, where the model helps me see the big picture and make better design choices based on the overall form.

I've wanted to build a large format camera since I was 15 years old. I started this project back then, but didn't have the skill or the attention to detail that it required. In a lot of ways, this project turned woodworking from something I did with my dad as a kid to something I wanted to pursue on my own as an adult.
I'm excited to finally come back to this project, but also anxious to complete it before anything gets in the way.

I'm working with some 8/4 ribbon Sapele, which will be trimmed down to 12mm or so to create two mitered frames. The plywood needed to be perfectly square because it's a reference for assembling the frames, so the shooting board helped me dial those in. In order to get everything lined up right, I also need a lens board early on in the process. The walnut burl veneer is going to be laminated to some Baltic birch for the lens board, and it should add some nice contrast once it's finished. by @kitelakewoodworking
