Mardig’s Forest — A commissioned permanent installation utilizing the unfinished sculptures and scraps of Kachian.

One of if not the most important works I have made to date.

This project wouldn’t have been possible without the hands of @kaliegarrett / the trust of R. Creamer / and the mad genius of Mardig Kachian.

This work will be available to view by the public soon.

To re-imagine the incomplete and disassembled works of a deceased artist is daunting to say the least. Thankfully, the most successful works are the ones that simply make themselves.

Mardig Kachian meticulously fabricated wood-based sculptures for over a decade in his Gowanus warehouse, seemingly with little to no ambition for his work to ever reach the public eye. I’ve read all of his journals, and still am unable to truly decipher a goal or a statement behind his making. I’ve come to the conclusion that that is the point. He made because he had to.

“The Cityscape”, while left in pieces, was the most realized work left behind when Mardig passed. @kaliegarrett and I spent hours scouring old photographs and sketches to discern Mardig’s original vision. This is our interpretation with a few adjustments and additions.

This work isn’t about the artist who crafts and arranges the objects - it’s about the objects themselves and what is possible when we listen closely enough to hear their call.

This project would not have been possible without the talented hands of Kalie, for whom I am so grateful.

The new steward of the warehouse and protector of all the objects inside, Ron Creamer, plans to reinvent the space to serve the creative and cultural fantasies of the community of Gowanus. More to come.
