Ancestral Series

I’ve spent several weeks working on this painting. The traditional colorful clothing was SO much fun to paint. Beautiful textiles have always excited me. These hardworking women remind me of my aunties who married into my father’s side of the family and did back breaking work everyday. Carrying objects on one’s head as a practical maneuver captured my imagination as a child.

My aunties had the thankless task of forming dung into patties for fueling fire. The patties would be slapped against an adobe wall to dry and store until needed to fuel cooking fires. taken in Atlanta, Georgia by @kiteswali
