The hardest part of growing a machinery procurement company isn’t the workload.

It’s the first yes.

In New York last month, Simon Herrera reminded me I’m not the only one who feels it.

He runs almost the exact same business as me.
Equipment procurement, asset-light, a network of over 7,000 suppliers he manages for his clients.

We talked for hours, and by the end of the night we’d agreed to team up internationally.

But one thing stuck with me most. Simon’s clients don’t question the value of a procurement partner like they used to. Not because he pitches it better, but because 8 years of proof did it for him.

Although Found Procurement hasn’t been around for 8 years, once someone works with us, they see the speed and the network in action, and they stay, because the value is obvious.

But before that, it can be hard to prove.

Simon’s got a longer track record. Mine’s building the same way his did, one client at a time.

Came home with a new partner on the other side of the world, and a clear reminder of what actually closes that gap.

Not a better pitch.

Just doing the work.

2 weeks ago I flew to New York.

An opportunity that only showed itself a week before the trip.

A private dinner in New York with Sir @danspena and 80 other entrepreneurs doing M&A around the world.

50+ hours of travel.

Under 36 hours on the ground.

Worth every minute.

Found Group is building an acquisition capability aimed squarely at heavy industry and infrastructure, the businesses that keep mining and construction moving.

You don’t build that capability just by reading about it.

You build it by sitting in rooms with people who have already done it.

The conversations that night were the sharpest I’ve had in years.

No small talk.
No posturing.

Just operators talking honestly about what worked, what cost them, and what they’d do differently.

One of them was Simon Herrera.

He runs a business in the United States with almost identical capability and values to Found Procurement.

During the night we found global alignment, working together to strengthen our international service and give our clients reach on both sides of the world.

That relationship alone justified the flights.

And then there’s Dan.

Whatever you think of his delivery, the man is right about one thing above all else: doing beats planning.

Every time!

The world is full of people with a beautiful strategy and nothing built.

He has spent fifty years proving that action is the only thing that compounds.

I flew 50 hours for a 5 hour dinner because the opportunity was in front of me and the answer was yes.

I’ve been wrong about a lot.

Not small stuff either.
Things I would have argued with anyone about.

The one that cost me the most was thinking I could just work harder.

Longer days, more of everything, and it would eventually work out.

It doesn’t.

You can only out-work yourself for so long.

The actual unlock was getting people around me who are better than I am at the things I’m average at.

The one that surprised me most was my health.

I had it dead last for years.

Business first, always! 💪🏽

Everything else if there was time left.

Then I flipped it, and the business grew faster than it ever had while I was grinding myself into the ground for it.

I now know it comes down to focus.

But I could only be truly focused if my mind and body were sharp.

And the one I’m almost embarrassed about is marketing 🤦🏽‍♂️

I genuinely thought it was for people whose product wasn’t good enough to sell itself and that you couldn’t do it for service based businesses.

Turns out if nobody knows who you are, nobody gets the chance to find out how good you are.

And I am sure that there will be six more next year.

I talk all day, every day and I’m sure most of you know that.

Whether it’s on the phone or at in person meetings.

But five minutes in front of strangers had my hands shaking.

That was The Speakers Project with Happiness Co.

A few things that stuck with me from this amazing experience.

Structure and courage beats confidence.

A story with real bones will carry you even when your hands are shaking.

The pause does more work than the words.
Silence feels like forever up there and about half a second to everyone else.

You’re not the hero of your own talk.

The audience is.

You’re just the one who went first.

Being polished isn’t the goal.
Being honest is.

The moments that landed hardest all weekend were the ones people almost didn’t say.

Thank you to Julian Pace for creating the space and for pushing when it would have been easier to let us off the hook.

And to all the Happiness Co facilitators for the coaching and the straight feedback.

To everyone who got up and told their story this weekend, that took guts.

Some of what I heard in that room I’ll be chewing on for a while.

Doing hard things creates calluses on the mind.

Standing up in front of strangers counts.

As you grow older, it’s less about popularity

It’s less about validation from people you probably don’t even care about

It’s less about trying to fit in

And it’s more about alignment

Surrounding yourself with people who genuinely want to see you win, and you wanting the same for them

Being around people who share your values, your standards, and the direction you’re heading

Growing older is a gift and like a fine wine we get better with age 🤣

But it comes with a cost a lot of people don’t talk about

A snake sheds its skin because it has outgrown it

You can’t grow while holding onto what no longer fits

The same is true in life

You’ll outgrow friendships

You’ll leave behind habits that once felt normal

You’ll walk away from people, places, and versions of yourself that no longer align with the man you’re becoming

That part isn’t easy

Sometimes it feels lonely

Sometimes you’ll question if you’re doing the right thing

But growth demands change

And change always asks you to let go before it gives you something better

The men who are willing to shed what no longer serves them are the ones who keep moving forward❤️

So Salute to all the men & women out there growing and becoming their best 👊🏻

Back in April I ended up running my first ultra marathon.

A mate of mine, @iamjakeward , asked if I’d pace him through the Delirious West 200 mile ultra trail run by Ultra Series Australia, starting at Northcliffe and finishing in Albany.

Without any thought, I said yes.

I didn’t even know how long I was going to be running for.
Of course I speculated in my head that it might be 40, 50 or maybe even 60km.

But I was completely wrong.

I started my pacing journey with Jake and @michaell.headd, another great man who was doing the full 340km challenge and we set off into the night.

Fast forward 25 and half hours and we made it the finish line with the help of @graydon.perrett who helped us mentally through the last 5km.

Thankfully, because that last 5km felt like a lifetime.

Of their incredible 84 hour run, totalling 340km, I was fortunate enough to run the last 116km with them.

About four times longer than I had ever run in my life.

We had hard stretches, of course.

Times when everything was hurting and we just moved in silence.

Then something would shift and Jake would find another gear completely.

His pace would lift and we’d push hard for 20 minutes straight. Watching that happen, more than once, showed me something about what the mind is actually capable of.

The final stretch was the worst.
Close enough to see the end, still a long way from it.

I wasn’t going to let them or myself down.

I told myself early in the journey that there was nothing that was going to stop me from bringing Jake and Michael to the finish line.

I believe the more hard things I have done, the more conditioned I have become for the next one.

Not easier.
Just more equipped.

The mind builds something every time you choose to push through.

This was one of those times.

It won’t be my last.

16 men had the courage to step into the fire
11 men stayed to finish what they started

Over 60 days they committed to:
• 9 Zoom calls
• 8 inner sessions
• 70+ hours of physical, mental and emotional work
• 1 brutal, life-changing 12-hour Misogi

This wasn’t just another program.
