Watching Blue Period recently took me right back to the time I was preparing for my design entrance exams.

I already loved sketching and drawing before I joined coaching, but I didn’t really understand the technicalities behind it. So, just like Yatora, I spent countless hours doing still life, learning the basics before we were allowed to dive into the more creative stuff.

My scale and proportions somehow never seemed to be right, no matter how much I tried. And whenever my teacher explained how to measure and place things accurately, it just never quite clicked. So seeing Yatora use his pencil to measure proportions in the show made something that had confused me for so long suddenly make complete sense.

And that was just one of the many little things Blue Period made me understand differently about art, the process of making it, and what it means to create something from the heart.

So I thought I’d dig up a few of my favourite old pieces from that time, when I was still learning and making sketches without overthinking them. Along with one of my favourite frames from the live-action adaptation (which was so much better for that scene than the one in the anime version.)

Enjoy looking at the aliens looking at you from the keyhole, and oranges drinking orange juice. taken in From The Past by @kitszo
