Exciting news!
The new KITTEC lid prop offers kiln owners to speed up the cooling phase at the end of each firing process!

Usually, this cooling phase takes quite a long time, especially in the lower temperature ranges. With the help of the KITTEC lid prop, which enables hot air to be discharged from a top loader kiln through a slightly opened lid, there’s now the possibility to accelerate the cooling process without the need of improvisation.

Mixing our own glazes has been the only right path for us from the very beginning. Only glazes we develop ourselves can handle 1300 °C – the temperature that gives our tableware its durability. At this firing temperature the clay body almost fully vitrifies and loses its porosity.

That’s exactly what we’re aiming for. Right now we’re preparing a lot of new glaze samples in the studio – testing textures and colors for @ajalachocolate , who aren’t afraid of color. We’ll be making drinking chocolate cups for them in several different colors. We’re still searching for the right ones. Sampling like this means at least 50 new tests every week. We’re really looking forward to the final colors.

Míchání vlastních glazur je pro nás od začátku tou jedinou správnou cestou. Jen díky vlastním glazurám dosáhneme na odolnost, kterou naše nádobí nabývá při 1300 °C. Při takové teplotě výpalu dochází k téměř plnému slinutí a keramika ztrácí svou pórovitost.

Na tyto vlastnosti cílíme. Nyní v atelieru připravujeme spoustu vzorků nových glazur - testujeme textury a barvy pro @ajalachocolate , kteří se barev nebojí. Právě pro ně budeme připravovat hrnky na čokoládu v několika různých barvách. Ty správné barvy stále hledáme. Takové vzorkování znamená každý týden minimálně 50 nových testů. Na finální barvy se opravdu těšíme.

Couldn’t be happier with this studio glow-up 🔥 @kittec_kiln

If you’ve been following along for a while, you might remember when this kiln moved into the studio almost two years ago — and honestly, it’s been a total game changer. More ergonomic to work with, way quicker to cool down, and most importantly: SO much more space for our mugs 😍

And while we can hardly believe it ourselves… we’re slowly, very slowly, starting to think about Christmas 🙊
Let’s just say we’re extra happy to have all that kiln space right now 🫶🏼

Swipe to fire the kiln. A green tint on an unfired glaze usually doesn’t mean the glaze will come out green after firing. With glazes, it’s not about mixing pigments the way we’re used to with paint — it’s about precise chemical reactions between metals and specific minerals at high temperatures.

That green before firing comes from chromium oxide, which, depending on the composition, can also produce colors like grey, pink, purple, or ochre.

Zelený odstín glazury před výpalem většinou neznamená, že po výpalu vznikne zelená barva. U glazur totiž nejde o míchání pigmentů, jak jsme zvyklí u barev, nýbrž o přesné chemické reakce kovů s konkrétními minerály za vysokých teplot.

Tuhle zelenou před výpalem přináší glazurám oxid chromu, který ale v různých kompozicích dokáže do glazur přinést i barvy jako šedá, růžová, fialová nebo okrová.
