Not everyone has access to financial services like bank accounts, credit, and loans. And often, this lack of access is because of systemic inequality.

Over 1.4 billion people worldwide—more than 31 percent of adults—are considered “unbanked”. In the U.S., 1 in 10 people are unbanked — and 1 in 4 are underbanked.

Meet Eric, a farmer in Ghana's Asuom community who grows cocoa and palm fruit, and also works as a mechanic for Serendipalm, the world's first certified organic and fair trade palm oil producer.

Eric has used loans over the years to expand his farm, open a shop for his wife, and help pay his nephew's university tuition. "The loans from Serendipalm are quite affordable compared to the other options available," he says.

Serendipalm works with around 800 smallholder farmers, most farming just 2 to 3 hectares, a fraction of the size of a conventional plantation. Small farms, real impact. 🌴

Since 2004, Kiva Lending Partner MiCrédito has been getting financial access to rural communities in Nicaragua that traditional banks overlook, sometimes traveling by motorcycle to reach clients.

Most of their loans go to women. Worldwide, women make up 55% of unbanked people, often because they lack the collateral traditional lenders require.

"The first ones to support me was MiCrédito," says entrepreneur Lisbeth, who used loans through the partner to build her clothing shop from nothing. "They were the first ones who gave me the opportunity."

This is what a trusted local partner looks like. 🤝

Christian started doing makeup at 14, teaching herself from YouTube videos in her rural Nicaraguan hometown. Her first attempts didn't go well.

"When I started, I knew nothing. I learned on my own, al bolsazo [from scratch], as we say in Nicaragua," she says.

Today, she runs her own beauty salon, offering everything from hair styling to manicures, and she's even working toward a master's degree. When COVID-19 hit her family hard, Christian didn't put her dream on hold. She used a Kiva loan through MiCrédito to invest in training and better equipment.

"Since I received the loan, I am proud that I earn my own income," she says. "I enjoy being independent."

Meet Cristina, a two-time Kiva borrower from Baltimore.

In 2020, as the pandemic upended so many livelihoods, Cristina used a Kiva loan to start a cleaning business. This year, she used a second loan to launch something new: an event production and catering business.
"In both cases, really the hard thing is access for capital," Cristina says. "Why? Because I am an immigrant, I can't get easily a loan, traditional loan, and so in both cases really, Kiva was very helpful for me."

What's stayed with her most is the idea that strangers halfway across the world would take a chance on her.

"I never think people in Asia or Australia can lend to us," she says. "The possibility that people that don't know you, they believe in you. They believe in your dream."

Kiva will be in New York City next week for Climate Week 2026! Our team will be covering a variety of events and connecting with partners and thought leaders to advance climate conversations and unlock funding for local climate solutions worldwide through Kiva.

This event is an important moment to gather among industry peers to engage on climate topics like directing capital, shaping policy, building infrastructure, and turning climate commitments into action. Kiva has launched meaningful partnerships that formed during this week in year's past (including unlocking some significant funding for small business owners and social enterprises!), and we're excited to see what this year brings.

🎗️I did humanitarian work before my kids were in school. The plan was always to bring them with me once they were older. Then they went back to school and that window got small.

So I’m really glad we found @kiva.org

It’s a way to keep giving from home, and it’s not a donation. You lend as little as $25, they pay it back, you lend it again. Same money, next person. That cycle doesn’t stop unless you stop it.

And my kids love it. It takes minutes reading stories from all over the world and helping someone kickstart what they’re trying to build. A baking station. A surgery someone needs in Palestine. Real people, building real things.

You see exactly where your money goes, which matters to me. Kiva’s a nonprofit, rated by Charity Navigator and GuideStar, and you can track every loan you’ve made.

My kids want to lend on every continent. That’s the goal now.
