dad,
on october 7th you made it to heaven. you left this world peacefully, with my hand in yours, and more love surrounding you than words could ever express.

in december of 2023, you faced the scariest diagnosis and somehow, with zero fear. as the ALS progressed over the last three years, it’s taken pieces of you little by little. but not once did you let it take your spirit. it’s hard to believe it’s been two years since ALS took your voice, but even when you could no longer speak, you never needed a voice to fill a room. your presence alone carried so much light. mourning someone who is still here on ticking time is a different kind of heartbreak. there are just no words for it. not only will i grieve you for the rest of my life, but i will grieve all the versions of life i thought you would be here to see. there’s nothing in this world that could have prepared me to lose you.

when you’ve sat beside someone you love and wished with everything in you that you could have more time, your perspective on life shifts. things that once felt huge suddenly feel very small. and if my dad taught me anything, it was to love everybody and anybody with everything in you. and to do it loudly. he was the kindest soul who cared for anyone who crossed his path. he was the most selfless, loving person and seriously the funniest man to walk this earth. if you knew my dad, you knew his laugh. you knew his jokes. you knew that he would do absolutely anything for the people he loved. he never needed a reason to show up for someone, and he never asked for anything in return. that was just who he was.

my dad loved big. he loved loudly. and he loved without hesitation. so i’ll spend the rest of my life trying to do the same.

i love you forever, dad. i will miss you in every tomorrow there is left for me. and maybe, in another life time, i’ll get to be your daughter for just a little bit longer❤️ by @kiyasampson
