It always begins with a walk.

Not with a plan or a sketch, but with slowing down enough to notice.

The Helford has become that place for me.

The changing tide, shell fragments beneath my feet, weathered textures, shifting light and quiet moments by the river gradually find their way into my work.

Back in the studio, those observations become layers of cloth, print and stitch - not to recreate the landscape, but to capture something of how it feels to be there.

Over the coming weeks I’d love to share more of that journey, following the thread from river to cloth.

Thank you for being here.

Karen

A huge thank you for your support, encouragement, conversations, and purchases throughout Cornwall Open Studios.

An honour to chat process and technique with so many artists, and share memories and ideas with lovely visitors. Excited and looking forward to working with those that took my details.

Thanks to @preciousandwild for the beautiful flowers grown just down the road that so many admired.

And of course a huge thank you to the Cornwall Open Studios organisers and @jeremysandersart for making it all possible.

Feeling grateful, inspired, and ready for the next chapter.

Trying to find a new rhythm and routine as I work through my induction, ready to move into the next stage of my degree.

Here, I’m bringing together learning from my last unit with this summer’s playful experiments, layering cloth, print and stitch.

A gentle reminder of my mantra as new projects begin and deadlines start to gather:

B…R…E…A…T…H…E…

How do you remember to pause and slow down as the seasons change?

So pleased to have three pieces of my work in The Poly Members Show and absolutely delighted to find a little red dot alongside my Cornish Poppies cyanotype!

It’s always lovely seeing my work out of the studio and hanging alongside such amazing local artists.

If you’re in Falmouth, do pop into The Poly and have a look — there’s so much to see and beautifully curated.

And a big thank you to whoever is taking Cornish Poppies home 💙

It’s been lovely welcoming people into my studio this week — talking about the processes and inspiration behind my work, while new work has been quietly progressing in between visitors.

This piece is still evolving.

Layers of blue, marks, texture and stitch are beginning to find their place — and some loose threads have found their way back into my work too.

Loose threads have always had a meaning for me. Life doesn’t always follow a neat line. At times we unravel, things become tangled, and somehow we find our way through.

It’s where kjloosethreads began.

So now I have a decision to make…

Do I leave these threads loose, or stitch them back into the cloth?

I think I already know which way I’m leaning, but I’d love to know what you think 💙 taken in Helford Passage by @kj_loose_threads

Every landscape holds traces of the people who’ve passed through

Some are obvious

Others easily missed

A broken piste marker

A forgotten spoon

Water polishing stone

Every object carries a story

Sometimes all we have to do is notice…

Every walk begins with curiosity, allowing moments to breathe and appreciate natural beauty.

I rarely know what I’ll find, but I’m always looking for the details that others might leave behind.

On this walk it was a scallop shell.

Not because it was perfect, but because years of being shaped by the tide had given it its own story.

Back in the studio, that shell became more than an object I’d collected.

It became texture.

Through layers of cloth, pigment and stitch, its delicate ridges were translated into something entirely new.

This is how my work begins.

Not with a finished design…

but with a quiet moment beside the water.

I’ve been exploring a deeper colour palette, building layers, capturing textures.

Working with linen and soya pigment is a slow process where each piece evolves over time.

Inspired by the colours and atmosphere of the Cornish coast, this feels like the beginning of a new chapter rather than a departure from the last.

I’d love to know what you think.
