would love to know where y’alls are from and if you’re paying for any of these + how much. it’s so interesting!

if you’re renting, how much pet rent are y’alls paying? it’s terrible because you’re not charging me per human so why’re you charging me per pet! 😭 for those not in california/the US. there’s no charge for service animals/emotional support animals. kkami is neither of those and we’re never going to fake that.

it’s national black dog day! 🐾

black dog syndrome is sadly a thing but we hope more people see how wonderful black dogs are.

they’re super cute!
they’re not scary.
they’re photogenic.
and look so wonderful in color.

we hope more black dogs (and pets in general) find their forever homes like kkami. we are so grateful for her and love her so much. 🥹

dogs be living their best lives in korea 😂 it was kkami’s first time in a pet stroller and she didn’t want to sit haha. do you have a stroller for your dog? and should I buy one in the states for kkams? 👀

it’s very common to see pet strollers in korea, especially at the mall, with so many people owning dogs nowadays. many stores have pet stickers on the ground and there are designated areas for foo/drinks that allow dogs as well. too many cuties!

sounds of seoul + morning walk to seoul station to get blue bottle coffee and the viral hanjungsun mochi. we love our neighborhood because everything is so convenient and lovely.

if you’re there in the summer, you’ll hear cicadas 🦗 everywhere and 20k steps with incline because the hills and stairs are calling. 😂

I hope seoul makes it on your list to visit! 💛

👀 stay til the end for a cute surprise! it was poodle chaos for a few weeks but we loved it.

📝 things to note:
- we took two pet carriers with us and since both were approved, we switched her to the more comfy one for the flight.
- we took a night flight so that kkams can sleep through it, and it worked out well.
- we arrived at 5am and just hit the ground running. It helped with our jet lag and kkams did well too.
- have all your documents ready in a folder for flight check-in and at immigration. asiana airlines was thorough in checking all the necessary docs; USDA-endorsed health certificate, FAVN test results, and also rabies vaccination certificate. I brought it all just in case. we filled out a flight form agreeing to statements such as keeping kkams in the carrier, she’s not aggressive, not sedated, etc. standard liability stuff and then paid $290 for her seat.
- we filled kkams water bottle after security check.
- took her for one last potty break before boarding.
- she slept most of the time and only woke up for a bit where were gave her water and a little snack with lots of head rubs.
- going through immigration was easy. we showed them kkams and the docs and that was it.

pt. 4 | preparing my dog for international travel - los angeles to seoul

getting a USDA-endorsed health certificate was stressful (and costly!) but here we are! last step before you fly with your pet. 🎉

🇰🇷 everything I’ve spent (and learned) taking kkami to seoul

🐶 we’re flying our 9ishlb mini poodle to seoul soon, and international pet travel is a whole process. sharing the FAVN test breakdown, the timeline, and every dollar I’ve spent so far.

💛 save this for your travel prep and hope that seoul makes your travel list one day or again with your pet!

💉 what is a FAVN test?
Fluorescent Antibody Virus Neutralization is a rabies antibody blood test that rabies-free countries require before they’ll let your pet in. south korea is one of them.

kkami got her 3-year rabies vaccine (hers was expiring), we waited 30 days, then did the FAVN test 3 months before our flight. results came in 16 days. generally, it’s advised to start the process 3-6 months out.

🌏 countries that require FAVN + how long the test stays valid:

1 year from blood draw:
🇸🇬 singapore, 🇹🇼 taiwan

2 years:
🇰🇷 south korea, 🇯🇵 japan, 🇦🇺 australia, 🇳🇿 new zealand

3 years:
🌺 hawaii (only US state that requires it)

lifetime of the pet (as long as rabies vax stays current):
🇬🇧 united kingdom, 🇪🇺 most of the EU

💸 what I’ve spent so far:
asiana airlines flight: $480 (round trip economy)
travel consultation w/ our vet: $175
3-year rabies vaccine: $38
FAVN test: $350
Total: $1,043 and counting

🇰🇷 seoul in a few weeks and getting kkami comfortable in her pet carrier is important since the flight is 13+ hours. we’re taking a night flight so we hope she can sleep through it.

🌳 the trip we planned vs. the trip we had in sequoia.
we packed for the weekend but only stayed one day.

a few people got sick.
our accommodation’s ac was blowing hot air.
it was very hot inside and outside.
our other hikes would’ve been more rigorous and up windy roads.
so we decided to head home in the evening.
instead of focusing on what we didn’t get to do, we’re grateful for what we did do.
we all saw sequoias for the first time.
we enjoyed a nice, easy hike while taking in the sights.
lots of convos and singing in the car.
a handful of photos and videos that we’ll cherish forever.
and more core memories with kkami and loved ones.
