Yesterday was a very long travel day! We left Oslo, Norway, flew to Paris, and then continued to Boston. Our flight from Paris was delayed, and by the time we finally walked through our front door, we had been traveling for 20 hours!

But even a long and exhausting journey can bring new discoveries. At Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris, we came across a giant cat! 🐈 Not exactly what you expect to encounter between flights, but certainly something that made us smile.

After 12 days of exploring Luxembourg, Germany, France, and Norway, we were finally home.

And perhaps yesterday’s most important discovery was that after so many wonderful adventures, delays, airports, and airplanes, there really is no place like home. Especially when a certain little cat named Mikka is waiting for us! ❤️ taken in Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport by @klein6284

The MUNCH Museum deserves a separate post.

Yesterday, during our museum marathon in Oslo, we ended the day at MUNCH — a museum devoted to the life and work of Norwegian artist Edvard Munch.

Of course, everyone knows The Scream. But seeing Munch’s work beyond that one iconic image gave me a very different appreciation of him as an artist. His paintings explore love, anxiety, loneliness, illness, death, and the complicated business of simply being human.

And then there is The Scream itself. Seeing the real work in person is one of those experiences that feels strangely familiar — you have seen the image hundreds of times, yet suddenly you are standing in front of the actual thing.

I also really enjoyed the exhibition on the third floor. It was quite different from the Munch exhibitions and added another dimension to the visit.

The museum itself is an experience too — a striking modern building rising above Oslo’s waterfront, with multiple floors of art and spectacular views over the city and fjord.

I came primarily to see The Scream. I left feeling that Edvard Munch was much more interesting than the one painting that made him famous — and that the museum bearing his name has much more to offer than Munch alone. taken in Munch Museum Oslo by @klein6284

When you travel to a new city, every day brings new discoveries and experiences.

Today in Oslo, we walked to the Royal Palace before continuing to Vigeland Park, home to more than 200 sculptures by Norwegian artist Gustav Vigeland. The park is an extraordinary exploration of people, relationships, and the human experience.

From there, we crossed the city to a fish restaurant near Akershus Fortress, where I had the freshest salmon burger for lunch. We then explored the fortress and visited the Norwegian Resistance Museum, learning about Norway under German occupation during World War II and those who resisted.

Finally, we walked back to our hotel. After so many miles, the sauna and jacuzzi are calling.

One of my favorite things about traveling is that you never have to look far for something new. In an unfamiliar place, the entire day becomes a discovery. taken in Oslo, Norway by @klein6284

Yesterday we arrived in Oslo, Norway. 🇳🇴 After checking into our hotel, we went out for dinner and explored the city a bit. It was my first time in Oslo, and strangely, from the beginning, it felt both new and somehow familiar.

Today was a day of museums. We visited three, all within walking distance of each other on the Bygdøy peninsula, but each showing us a completely different side of Norway.

At the Fram Museum, we learned about Norwegian polar exploration and walked aboard the Fram, the ship used by Fridtjof Nansen and later Roald Amundsen on their expeditions into some of the most extreme places on Earth. Standing inside the actual ship made the stories of those expeditions feel much more real.

The Kon-Tiki Museum was especially personal for me. I first learned about Thor Heyerdahl as a child through Yuri Senkevich’s popular Soviet TV program about travel and exploration. I was fascinated by those stories of distant places and extraordinary expeditions. Today, decades later, I stood in Oslo looking at the actual Kon-Tiki raft I had heard about as a child. There is something very special about seeing in real life something that has lived in your memory for so many years.

We finished at the Norwegian Museum of Cultural History, an open-air museum filled with historic buildings from different parts of Norway. Walking among the old wooden houses and farm buildings gave us a glimpse into how people here lived through different periods of Norwegian history.

Three museums in one day — polar exploration, ocean adventures, and everyday Norwegian life. A very full second day in Oslo and a wonderful way to get to know Norway a little better. taken in Oslo, Norway by @klein6284

Another day exploring Luxembourg City. 🇱🇺

We started at the Luxembourg City Museum, where we learned even more about the country and its history. Then we took the elevator down into the Grund — quite literally moving from one level of the city to another.

We had been down there briefly on a rainy Thursday, but today we had time to really explore. We wandered through the old streets and made our way to Neumünster Abbey.

And we finally solved the mystery of the fox we keep seeing around Luxembourg. 🦊 Renert — Luxembourg’s famous trickster fox and a character with a special place in its literary and cultural history.

We learned quite a bit about Luxembourg before coming here, but there is a big difference between reading about a place and actually being in it. Walking its streets, seeing how the different levels of the city connect, recognizing things we had read about, and discovering things we hadn’t expected has given us a completely different sense of Luxembourg.

A week here has made this tiny country feel much bigger than it looks on the map. taken in Grund, Luxembourg by @klein6284

We finally made it to France! 🇫🇷

Yesterday we were supposed to go to Metz, but demonstrations changed our plans at the last minute. Today we tried again and took the train to Thionville.

We crossed the Moselle, explored the old town, wandered around, and had lunch in France.

This is exactly why we chose Luxembourg as our base — to get on a train, cross borders, and discover places we had never seen before.

We leave Luxembourg on Monday, and I’m so glad we got our day in France before we go. One more new place, one more experience, and one more piece of Europe that is no longer just a name on a map. taken in Thionville France by @klein6284

Today’s adventure definitely did not go according to plan — and that turned out to be part of the fun.

We had planned a day trip to Metz, France, but after following the news about ongoing protests and disruptions there, we decided to abort the mission. Metz will have to wait for another trip!

Instead, we quickly came up with Plan B and headed to Vianden, a beautiful little town in northern Luxembourg dominated by its spectacular medieval castle.

We explored Vianden Castle, wandered through its old rooms and courtyards, learned about its long history, admired the views over the town and the Our River, and then spent some time exploring Vianden itself.

Not at all the day we had planned when we woke up this morning, but that’s one of the things I love about traveling: sometimes you simply change direction and see where the day takes you.

Today, it took us to a castle. 🏰🇱🇺 taken in Vianden Castle, Luxembourg by @klein6284

A Rainy Day in Luxembourg 🇱🇺

I checked the forecast and knew rain was on the way, so I planned a museum day — with a few Luxembourg sights along the way.

We spent several hours at the Nationalmusée um Fëschmaart — Luxembourg’s National Museum of Archaeology, History and Art. I especially loved the archaeological collections and seeing objects from the Bronze and Iron Ages. There’s something incredible about standing in front of things made and used more than 2,000 years ago. It makes history feel remarkably real.

Despite the rain, we walked along the Chemin de la Corniche, known as “the most beautiful balcony in Europe,” before making our way down to the Grund, the picturesque lower part of the old city that we’d been admiring from above.

We even found the elevator — definitely preferable to taking the stairs in the rain, especially when they’re slippery!

It turned out to be a wonderful rainy-day adventure filled with ancient history, art, beautiful views, old streets, the Grund, and plenty of Luxembourg rain.☔️ taken in Luxembourg, Luxembourg by @klein6284

Today we traded Luxembourg for Germany and spent the day exploring Trier. 🇩🇪

And it really couldn’t be an easier day trip — only about 50 minutes by train from Luxembourg City, and our round-trip tickets for both of us were only about $30!

We spent the day walking through Trier, exploring, eating, getting a little lost, and simply enjoying being somewhere we had never been before.

Trier is Germany’s oldest city, and I loved seeing the Roman ruins and the beautiful cathedral. It is amazing to stand in front of something that has been there for almost 2,000 years and think about all the people who came before us.

We had a lovely lunch, took our time wandering through the city, and I tried hazelnut ice cream for the first time. How have I missed that all these years? It was delicious!

But what I will probably remember most is simply the day itself. Wayne and I walking through another city together, figuring out where we were going (or occasionally NOT figuring it out!), stopping when something caught our attention, and enjoying having nowhere else we needed to be.

These are the days I treasure. We are still curious, still exploring, and still making memories together. ❤️

Trier, you were lovely. taken in Trier, Germany by @klein6284

— Day 1 🇱🇺

Today we started exploring Luxembourg!

Wondering why the Finnish flag is flying beside the Luxembourgish flag? The President of Finland is visiting at the same time as we are. Apparently, we chose a rather diplomatic day to discover the city!

Our first day has been all about wandering and taking in Luxembourg’s beautiful streets, dramatic views, historic architecture, and blend of old-world charm and modern European life. taken in Luxembourg, Luxembourg by @klein6284

Last Sunday, we came home from our trail walk absolutely soaking wet. I felt seriously let down by the weatherman.

Today was just a lovely day, and the weatherman kept his promise: sunshine, pleasant temperatures, and no surprises.

Trust in meteorology restored. For now. 😄 #10000stepsaday taken in Southern New England Trunkline Trail by @klein6284

Today I went into Boston to see The Great Elephant Migration, an extraordinary outdoor art installation featuring a herd of 100 life-sized elephants.
Seeing the elephants in person was much more striking than seeing photographs. Each one has its own presence and personality, name, and together they create the feeling of a real herd moving through the city. I loved the contrast between these magnificent animals and the urban Boston setting.
It was beautiful, unexpected, and memorable—exactly the kind of experience my One New Thing a Day project is meant to capture. Sometimes something new is simply going somewhere familiar and discovering that, for several weeks, it has been transformed. #thegreatelephantmigration by @klein6284
