The 2027/2028 academic school year will be the 50th anniversary of the Outdoor Pursuits (OP) program at Fort Lewis College. In celebration, that year we will be offering 50 programs scattered amongst 5 continents! Two of these continents are SOUTH AMERICA (Ushuaia, Argentina 🇦🇷) and ANTARCTICA 🇦🇶. Working in close collaboration with Ice Axe Expeditions, we will be offering a DONOR ORIENTED fundraising ski trip to Antarctica!! That’s right!! Skiing the white continent with OP!! This is NOT a student trip. Rather this program is specifically designed in an effort to raise funds for the FLC OP program to help lower economic barriers for OP students. 🚨 REGISTRATION IS OPEN!! 🙌 🚨 However the OP rope team ONLY has a FEW SPOTS LEFT! DONOR & ALUMNI TRIP. IT’S HAPPENING AGAIN!!!! Between January 2020 & January 2026, OP has sent SIX successful trips to the powder paradise of Hokkaido, Japan for skiing as well as multiple trips to Patagonia, Chile for hut-to-hut trekking adventures. They have all been trips to remember, and they continue a legacy of BIG adventures that have taken OP all over the globe. In an effort to raise funds to support OP’s adventure programming for FLC students, Outdoor Pursuits is heading back to Hokkiado Japan for TWO ski trips this January 2027. One trip will be entirely backcountry touring based and a separate trip will be entirely ski area resort based. PLEASE NOTE: Registration is NOT yet open. Registration will open July 1, 2026. We will give notice before registration opens, and we expect trips to fill VERY quickly. Please reach out to clear up any questions you have now, as hesitating when registration opens might result in a missed opportunity.   DATES: * January 2027. 9 days in country. * Note that it takes a minimum of two full days to travel from the US to Hokkaido. I got to go back and spend some time on Koma Kulshan (Mt. Baker) in Washington this spring with a rad @outdoorpursuitsflc ⛷️ squad. We hiked 🏔️. We ski toured 🏔️. We camped ⛺️. We summited🏔️. We ⛷️ down 🏔️. It was great. I was in brand new 🎿 boots from @2ndavesports in Durango for this trip & apprehensive about it to say the least. Marc at 2nd Ave is an absolute foot 🦶 wizard 🧙‍♂️. If you need ski boot work, go to Marc at 2nd Ave Sports in Durango. I lived in these boots from sunrise 🌅 to sunset. All the hike ups ⬆️, ski ⛷️ down ⬇️, and camp ⛺️ time. These boots were awesome! Thanks Marc! The @raide.research Tour Tech shell, bibs, and Hybrid Hoody were my clothing of choice. I lived in this kit for the entire trip. Nothing else was needed. Nothing needed to be trimmed away. That kit is 🔥. The Raide LF 40 pack carried everything for six days of ski touring with a full glacier guide kit and all my camp gear (tent, /sleeping kit, etc). It was tight, but that pack 🎒 is 🙌. Literary a quiver killer pack. Big enough for a full six day glaciated ski touring & camping kit, but small enough for the individual days. Worth it! The @hestragloves Ergo Grip Active were the glove 🥊 of choose, and literally the only glove I wore the entire program. Of course my @backcountryaccess kit was with me the entire time as well. Prove. Shovel. 🪏 Transceiver. Solid. 🙌 Now on to summer. Stoked about the next big @fortlewiscollege Outdoor Pursuits ski programs. We’ve got 3 program headed to Japan 🇯🇵 this winter. ⚠️ CAUTION ⚠️ YELLING!! ⚠️ The first skier ⛷️ dropped. It was phenomenal! 🙌 2nd skier ⛷️ drops and on their 4th turn trigger a slide. They’re 🚨 injured 🚨, but not critically. You remember from your WFR course what the 3 critical systems are. It’s getting late. Could you get them back to the hut for the night? If they started getting worse, could you get them to a landing zone, and call for a helicopter 🚁 ? Wilderness First Responders or WFR is the definitive course for backcountry emergency medicine. This is the standard for recreationaliats and guides. There are still a few spots left in both WFR and WFR recert courses in Durango and Moab. These courses come with the three year certifications from Wilderness Medical Associates. Courses have combination of; EMTs, paramedics, ski patrollers, and an IFMGA Mountain Guide as instructors. There are no other courses in the west with that instructor combination. Come learn how to be the partner you want traveling & adventuring with YOU! Guide Highlight — Meet Josh! Josh is an IFMGA Licensed Mountain Guide, San Juan local, and someone who has very clearly figured out how to live many lifetimes in one. Based in Durango, Josh is the Director of @outdoorpursuitsflc at Fort Lewis College, where he makes works with college students on and off his skis. He’s a current ski patroller, founder of Kling Mountain Guides (now San Juan Expeditions), and the author of Backcountry Skiing Silverton—now in its 4th edition with over 10,000 copies sold with @beaconguidebooks. With 25+ years of working and playing in the San Juan Mountains, Josh brings deep local knowledge, steady leadership, and just enough mystery to keep us wondering how he fit all those bumper stickers on his Subaru back in college. This year’s trip to Antarctica 🇦🇶 with @iceaxeexpeditions was ALL TIME! A huge thanks to @icemandoug and @ashleighstevens for having the vision and organization to make it happen!! My crew got in TEN FULL DAYS of skiing ⛷️ and riding 🏂! 3 in Ushuaia, Argentina 🇦🇷 and then SEVEN on the White Continent in Antarctica 🇦🇶!!! 🙌We skied all conditions from pow to corn to crust and crud.
