In Korea, being the first person to eat dinner can actually be disrespectful, unless your the oldest.

It's a small tradition that carries a bigger meaning: respect for the people who came before you.

Culture is full of these everyday traditions that tell us so much about where we come from, how we grew up, and what we value.

What dinner table traditions did you grow up with?

Halloween is only about 20 years old in Korea. The holiday does not include kids tick or treating for candy like in the USA. However, there are still costumes, parties, and plenty of fun geared more towards teenagers and young adults. Despite the lack of Halloween candy culture, we wanted dot share a few delicious Korean candies you should enjoy.

Fermentation is a huge part of Korean flavor.

Each bite carries thousands of years of tradition, natural probiotics for your gut, and a depth of flavor you can’t rush.

What’s your favorite fermented food?

If you love Korean food, these are three ingredients worth getting to know.

Gochujang: fermented red pepper paste that brings spice, sweetness, and umami. It’s used in everything from soups and stews to stir-fries and fried foods. It’s also the main ingredient in our K-Mama Sauce,

DoenjangL fermented soybean paste with a deep, savory flavor. Think of it as a Korean cousin to miso. It’s essential in dishes like doenjang jjigae and doenjang guk.

Anchovy stock: a simple way to build a rich, complex base for Korean soups and stews.

You don’t need a pantry full of specialty ingredients to start cooking more Korean food. Learn a few of the foundational ingredients and you’ll start recognizing them everywhere.

And if you’re looking for an easy way to get more gochujang into your meals, grab a bottle of K-Mama Sauce. We made it so you can drizzle, dip, marinate, stir, and slather that gochujang goodness on just about anything.

What Korean ingredient should we break down next?

Gochujang is a fermented red pepper paste we use all the time in Korean cooking. Not to mention it's the base ingredient in our Korean hot sauce.

We love it because it's healthy, but also, so versatile!

Add it to soups, stews, kimchi. Use it as a marinade for chicken or throw it in some mayo for a spread (ok so that's not healthy), but you get the point.

We took that gochujang goodness and balanced it with easame oil, brown sugar, soy sauce, and spices so you can pour it onto just about anything. Rice bowls and bimbap to mac and cheese and omlettes, we want you to be able to have an easy way to taste the Korean flavor it brings.

What do you like to make with gochujang? by @kmamasauce

Korean food has words for flavor that English doesn’t always capture. When you can name what you want, you can build it on purpose. Save this, share it with a foodie friend, and tell us which word you’re trying to cook for this week.
