Standing Guanyin (Avalokitesvara), 10th centuryChinese, Five Dynasties-Northern Song dynastyGilded copper alloy with traces of pigmentVirginia Museum of Fine Arts, Richmond, VA, permanent collection This well-preserved, rare, Buddhist Guanyin, a Bodhisattva of Compassion (The Lord Who Looks Down), represents one who as reached the state of nirvana—all cessation of suffering—but turns back, refusing to enter bliss in order to offer help to all sentient beings. The figure points a finger upward with one hand. The other holds a vase containing a lotus flower, symbolizing spiritual enlightenment. Expressionless, worn, with long-held serenity, the face exudes peace—it glows. Adorned with a large headdress and luxurious necklace both full of intricate details—dragons, animals, and people—this sculpture carries the story of the death of Buddha. The figure, the largest of its kind, is hollow, and therefore, may even have been used as a reliquary. Like a guide, this presence soothes souls, piques curiosity, and contains the magnitude of time. Torn RetinaApril 2, 2026sketchesFor an unknown reason, my retina tore in my right eye. I started to see "floaters" that looked like strings and spots. I had to have laser treatment immediately. But, after a day of rest, I tried to draw, write, go outside. My eye will be blurry for "weeks," and I can't drive until the blurriness sharpens up.
