One year ago today our entire life changed in the blink of an eye.

At 22 weeks and 5 days pregnant with our baby girl, I was admitted to the hospital for an emergency rescue cerclage. The procedure went well and I was back in my room recovering when I experienced my worst fear: a preterm premature rupture of membranes.

I couldn’t believe this was happening. She was so little and hadn’t reached the age of viability yet. Doctors and nurses rushed in and out of my room like I was on one of the medical dramas I watch on TV. Various tests were being done and lots of medical jargon was flying around that I didn’t understand. It was the scariest day of my life.. I truly thought I was going to lose our daughter.

I felt so helpless and out of control. I wanted so badly to fix it, but there was nothing I could do but wait and see what happened. We were told that I would likely go into labor within the next couple days and that these first 24 hours were critical.

We were an emotional wreck, but eventually the next morning came and we experienced our first win: we made it through the first night.

The next 16 days spent in the hospital were filled with uncertainty, but much like the first 24 hours, small wins continued to stack on top of each other. Every ultrasound, every monitor, every conversation with my doctors proved things were stabilizing. I counted every hour, every day that she stayed safely inside me as a victory. The days passed by and at 24 weeks pregnant we reached our biggest win yet: viability!

On August 7th, I was FINALLY discharged! I spent the remaining 15 weeks of my pregnancy on bed rest, but at least I was home and our baby girl was doing well. My world became four walls, doctor’s appointments, and waiting. Waiting for another day. Another week. Another milestone.
Slowly but surely, those milestones that once seemed so far away and potentially out of reach started to become reality.

28 weeks.
32 weeks.
35 weeks.
Cerclage removal.
Full term.
