I didnโ€™t move to New York because I had every detail figured out.

And if youโ€™ve been waiting for that part of the storyโ€ฆ there isnโ€™t one.

I moved from LA to New York with three suitcases, one backpack, no car, and a decision.

And apparently a personal commitment to getting my steps in because I swear I have not stopped walking since I got here. ๐Ÿ˜‚

But hereโ€™s what New York is teaching me:

Sometimes the next version of your life doesnโ€™t need another six months of thinking. It needs you to make a decision.

Because there comes a point when asking more questions isnโ€™t giving you more clarity.

Itโ€™s helping you postpone the decision.

And capable women can live there for a LONG time.

We journal.
We pray.
We ask five people what they think.
We make the Sunday plan.
We find another podcast.
We research one more option.

Meanwhile, underneath all that noise, we already know something has to change.

Moving to New York didnโ€™t magically give me all the answers.

It forced me to stop requiring certainty before I gave myself permission to move.

And your next move doesnโ€™t have to be across the country.

It might be deciding what deserves your attention for the next 90 days.

Ending something you already know is over.

Protecting time that finally belongs to you.

Pursuing the idea you keep talking yourself out of.

Or simply admitting:
โ€œI know something needs to change. I just donโ€™t know where to start.โ€

You donโ€™t need your entire life figured out.
You need a starting point.

Thatโ€™s exactly why I created The Starting Point Kit.

Itโ€™s for the woman stuck between โ€œI know I want moreโ€ and โ€œOkayโ€ฆso what do I actually do first?โ€

No vague motivation. No one telling you what your purpose is.

Just a practical process to help you clear the noise, get honest about where you are, and figure out what deserves your attention now.

Comment START and Iโ€™ll send you the Starting Point Kit.
Or grab it from the link in my bio.

And if you see me walking around New York looking personally offended by how far away something isโ€ฆ

Mind your business. ๐Ÿ˜‚ by @knajula

Nobody misses who you were. They miss what you allowed.

Read that again, because thereโ€™s a difference and it will save you months of guilt.

The calls you always picked up. The mood you always managed. The plans you rearranged without being asked. That was the relationship. Not you. That.

So when they say youโ€™ve changed, theyโ€™re not describing your personality. Theyโ€™re describing an inconvenience. Something that used to be free now has a cost, and theyโ€™re pricing it out loud in front of you and calling it concern.

And hereโ€™s the part that stings โ€” youโ€™ll feel guilty anyway. Youโ€™ll replay the conversation. Youโ€™ll wonder if you were too cold. That guilt isnโ€™t a sign you did something wrong. Itโ€™s just the last withdrawal on an account you finally closed.

Let it bounce.

Pretty gets you picked. Pretty does not get you kept.

You already know this, because youโ€™ve been picked before. Picked fast, picked loud โ€” and then quietly returned. Two good weeks and a camera roll.

What people actually stay for is peace. Not quiet. Peace. A woman who isnโ€™t at war with herself in the middle of the relationship. Who isnโ€™t auditioning for a part she already booked. Who doesnโ€™t need to be told every six hours that sheโ€™s still the one.

And thereโ€™s no performing that. No filter for settled. No outfit, no routine, no version of yourself you can arrange into it. Itโ€™s either in you or it isnโ€™t yet.

Pretty opens the door. Peace is why he doesnโ€™t leave. Build the house.

Everybody quotes Ruth. Whither thou goest, I will go. But that story starts with her mother-in-law.

She left with a husband and two sons. She came back with none of them.

And when the women of the town saw her and called out her name โ€” Naomi! โ€” she stopped them. Donโ€™t call me that. Call me Mara. Because bitter is what happened to me.

She renamed herself after her worst season. Out loud. In front of everybody.

I want to be careful here, because I donโ€™t judge her for a second of it. It was real grief and she was not performing it. Sometimes the truest thing you can say is the worst thing that happened.

But here is what I noticed reading it again.

The book never calls her Mara. Not one time after that scene. The narrator says Naomi through the harvest, through Boaz, through the whole back half of the story, all the way to the last chapter where the women are at her house and thereโ€™s a baby on her lap.

She renamed herself. God didnโ€™t.

And some of you have been introducing yourself by a season for nine years. The divorce. The layoff. The diagnosis. The year everything came apart. You say it first so nobody else gets to, and you have been answering to it ever since.

Heaven kept your name the whole time.
Save this one.

Go from your country, and your kindred, and your fatherโ€™s house, to a land that I will show you.

Not here is the land. I will show you. Leave first, find out second.

And once you notice it, it is everywhere. Moses leaves Egypt entirely and spends forty years in Midian before anything burns. Joseph gets moved by force. Ruth leaves Moab with nothing. The elevation keeps arriving after the separation, never before it.

I donโ€™t think thatโ€™s God being dramatic about geography. I think proximity is loud.

The people who knew the old you are holding a model of you that was accurate once. It is generous, usually. It is also finished. And a new assignment has to be heard over the volume of everyone who already decided what youโ€™re for.

Now let me be very clear, because this can be misread and I donโ€™t want it misread. I am not telling you to leave anybody. That is between you and God and I am not in that conversation.

But separation is not only a moving truck. It is a boundary. A distance. One quiet season where you stop running every thought past the same four people.

And if youโ€™ve been praying for elevation while declining every single form of it, that might be the whole holdup.

Comment LEAVE and Iโ€™ll send you The Starting Point Kit โ€” five tools, thirty days, and the first one takes twenty minutes.

In John five thereโ€™s a pool where sick people would wait for the water to move. And thereโ€™s a man lying there who has been sick for thirty-eight years.

Jesus walks up. And the first thing He asks is whether the man wants to be healed.

I used to think that question was almost rude. Sir. He has been lying in that spot since before half these people were born. What kind of question is that.

But I have turned it over for years now, and I think it was the most necessary thing anybody had said to him.

Because thirty-eight years is long enough to build an entire life around a condition. There is the spot by the pool. There are the people who know his story and expect to hear it. There is the whole identity of being the one who is still waiting.

Healing takes all of that. He has to go find work. He has to be around people who only ever knew him as sick and now have no idea what to do with him. The miracle is also an eviction.

And some of you are sitting in exactly that. You have prayed about the thing for years, and you have also โ€” quietly, without ever deciding it โ€” built your life around it not changing.

The yes is between you and Him. Iโ€™m not in that part and I wouldnโ€™t try to be.

What I can help with is the morning after it. The schedule, the identity, the first practical move in a life that was shaped around waiting.

Comment WELL and Iโ€™ll send you The Starting Point Kit. Five tools, thirty days, first one takes twenty minutes.

Before Esther is the story, there is already a queen, and her name is Vashti.

Seven days into the party. He had been drinking the entire time. And on the seventh day the king sends for his wife, because he wants her brought out in front of all those men so they can look at her.

She says no.

Here is what I cannot get past: scripture never tells us why. Not a sentence. She refuses, she loses the crown, the narrative moves on to Esther, and nobody ever circles back to explain it.

So we filled it in. I have heard it preached as pride. I have heard it preached as rebellion. I have heard an entire sermon built on a motive the text does not contain.

And I have wondered other things. Maybe she was tired. Maybe something had happened in that palace that we do not get to read. Maybe she had simply reached the end of being summoned.

We do not know. I think the silence is doing something on purpose.

Because you have a no in your own life that people assigned a reason to. Within a week. Confidently. And the reason they chose is not the real one, and you have been carrying a motive that was never yours.

You do not owe anybody the explanation. She never gave one either, and the story went on without it.

Tell me what you think she was thinking. I actually want to know.

Youโ€™ve been calling it selfish.

Bad timing. Too much upheaval. Youโ€™ve stayed up more than once running the math on whether youโ€™re taking something from them by doing this now.

So let me tell you what theyโ€™re actually receiving, because I donโ€™t think you can see it from inside your own house.

Theyโ€™re getting a live demonstration of what a grown woman does when she wants a different life. Not a lecture. Not a quote. A demonstration, at close range, with the awkward parts fully visible โ€” the uncertainty, the unglamorous admin, the days it clearly isnโ€™t going well.

That is the version that teaches. The tidy version teaches nothing because nobody believes it.

And they will not remember whether it worked. I want to be very clear about that. Theyโ€™ll remember that you tried, at an age when everybody around you was calling it late.

Hereโ€™s the part that should settle it. One day one of them is going to be forty, in a life that has stopped fitting them. And when that day comes, they will already have watched a woman handle exactly that.

They wonโ€™t have to invent it. Theyโ€™ll have seen it done.

Youโ€™re not taking something from them. Youโ€™re handing them something.

Send this to a woman who thinks sheโ€™s being selfish.

Who are you when nobody needs anything from you?

Take a second with it. Not the polished answer โ€” the real one. Most of us donโ€™t have it readily available, and that absence is the whole point of the question.

If youโ€™re the one everybody calls, your sense of self has been living inside being useful for a very long time. And usefulness is a genuinely beautiful thing that will quietly eat an identity if nothing interrupts it.

Hereโ€™s how you can test it this week. Take one hour where nobody needs anything from you. No calls to return, nothing to fix, nothing to handle.

Most women make it about eleven minutes.

Then she reorganizes a drawer. Or texts somebody to check on them. Or starts a task nobody assigned her, in an hour that was supposed to be empty on purpose.

Thatโ€™s not restlessness and it isnโ€™t a discipline problem.

Thatโ€™s a nervous system going out to look for the version of you it knows how to be, because the other version hasnโ€™t had the floor in about fifteen years.

Sheโ€™s still in there. Sheโ€™s just very out of practice at being asked anything.

Give her an hour. See who shows up.

I want to argue with the most repeated advice in this entire space.

Take the leap.

A leap is a terrible way to test anything. It gives you exactly one outcome and no information. If it doesnโ€™t work, you cannot tell whether the idea was wrong, the timing was wrong, or you simply landed badly โ€” and by then youโ€™ve usually spent whatever youโ€™d have needed to try it again.

Also notice who says it. Itโ€™s always somebody who already landed. Nobody offers that advice while theyโ€™re still in the air, and nobody whose leap didnโ€™t work is invited to give the talk.

What you actually need is a step small enough that being wrong about it costs you nothing you canโ€™t replace.

Small enough to do twice. Small enough to survive a no. Small enough that you can run it, read the result, and adjust โ€” which is the entire point and the thing a leap canโ€™t do.

That isnโ€™t playing it safe. Playing it safe is doing nothing. This is how you get eleven attempts instead of one dramatic attempt, and eleven beats one every single time.

If you want the first step, comment STEP and Iโ€™ll send you The Starting Point Kit. Five tools, thirty days, and the first one takes twenty minutes.

Youโ€™ve told four people about it now. Letโ€™s talk about what you were actually doing.

You brought it up to your husband and watched how he took it. You mentioned it to your mother in a lighter voice than you meant it. You floated it with your friend and read her face before she even answered.

You called that getting input. It was an application.

And hereโ€™s the thing about that โ€” they can give you a great deal. Encouragement. Money. A ride. A babysitter. A genuinely useful opinion. What not one of them can give you is permission, because permission for your life was never issued to a person in the first place.

What makes it worse is that they can feel you asking.

People know when theyโ€™re being handed something heavier than an opinion, and they get careful. Then you read careful as hesitation, and hesitation as a verdict.

Nobody is blocking you. They just donโ€™t have the thing you keep going to them for, and they canโ€™t tell you that because you never asked it out loud.

So change what youโ€™re asking for. Go to them for support, which they have. Stop going to them for approval, which they donโ€™t.

Send this to whoeverโ€™s waiting on a yes nobody can issue.

Say out loud when you decided. Not when you launched. When you decided.

For most women I talk to, the answer is months ago.

And in between there was the research, the pricing, the quiet rearranging of money, the four separate conversations with the same sister, the twenty minutes at night looking at how somebody else does it.

And she will still open with โ€œI havenโ€™t really started yet.โ€

You think day one is the launch. Day one was the decision โ€” and everything since has been work, even the parts nobody could see.

This matters for a practical reason, not a sentimental one. If you date yourself from a start line that isnโ€™t real, you will always look slow to yourself. You will be seven months in and evaluating yourself like itโ€™s week one.

Thatโ€™s how capable women burn out before anybody ever sees a single thing. Youโ€™re doing the work and refusing yourself the credit, and that arrangement runs out eventually.

So go count from the real day. Then look at whatโ€™s actually left between here and something visible.
Itโ€™s almost always less than you think it is.

And if you genuinely canโ€™t tell whatโ€™s left, comment COUNT and Iโ€™ll send you The Starting Point Kit. Five tools, thirty days, first one takes twenty minutes.
