Fisherman’s hat inspired by gansey, or guernsey, knit jumpers originally from the north-east coast of Britain. Legend has it each village had its own combination of patterns so if a fisherman went lost at sea they could identify where he was from by his gansey.

The gansey was traditionally knitted by the fishermen’s wives and the pattern passed down from mother to daughter through the generations.

This one was knit by me for my father, it shows cables representing ropes, diamonds representing fishing nets, textured stitches representing ladders, and one tree of life representing stages of life and the importance of family.
