20th-century and contemporary modernist flatware from the 10,000+ pieces collection of Dung Ngo @misterngo
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
I am excited to share two pieces of big news for 2026:

First, my modernist flatware collection will form the basis of the exhibition KNIFE FORK SPOON: EVERYDAY TOOLS, EXTRAORDINARY DESIGN, opening in May at the Denver Art Museum. Curated by @darrinalfred, the exhibition will feature over 150 designs spanning from 1900 to the present, with thematic sections on airline cutlery, children cutlery, travel cutlery, and more. A launch and talk is scheduled at the museum on September 26, so please mark your calendar.

Second, the accompanying book KNIFE FORK SPOON: MODERNIST CUTLERY 1900–2025 will be published October 20. At 600 pages, the book presents a comprehensive view of iconic flatware by designers such as Josef Hoffmann, Russel Wright, Gio Ponti and Isamu Noguchi, as well as highlighting lesser-known and experimental designs from Europe, the United States, Japan and beyond.

Having started my collection around 2000, these two projects have been decades in the making, and I can’t wait to finally be able to share it with you. Much more news and details to come.

Designer: Carl Auböck lll
Design: Duo
Manufacturer: Rosenthal
Year: 1968

The name Carl Auböck is revered by collectors in the know, but most don’t know there are four Carl Auböcks. The Werkstätte Carl Auböck has occupied the same address in Vienna’s seventh district for over a century, passing through four generations of the same family. Carl Auböck II (1900–1957), who studied at the Bauhaus before taking over his father’s bronze workshop, established the visual language that still defines the atelier: functional modernism made from brass, leather, horn, and wood. His son Carl Auböck III (1924–1993) inherited both workshop and ethos; his grandson Carl Auböck IV continues to produce new designs alongside the classics. by @knifeforkspoon.co

Design: Moscow Olympics commemorative cutlery
Manufacturer: The Moscow Olympics Committee
Year: 1980
.
Moscow hosted the Olympics for the first take in 1980, the year the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan. As a response, the US and many other western counties boycotted. Hence, souvenirs from this Olympics are hard to find in the west. This set was found in Krakow this past June, and I would have posted during the Paris Olympics but the box sent by Polish Post just arrived three months later (not an Olympic record). by @knifeforkspoon.co
