OPEN CALL: KNITTERS IN RESIDENCE

Hawksbill Sea Turtle Cohort | September–November 2026

What if knitting could carry sea turtle conservation into cafés, Instagram feeds and everyday wardrobes?

Knit for Wildlife is opening applications for a global, digital residency exploring the Hawksbill sea turtle and the conservation stories behind one of the world's most critically endangered marine turtles.

During this 3-month residency you will:

🧶Design a knitting pattern.
🧶Learn directly from leading sea turtle conservation organisations and initiatives @barbadosseaturtleproject @naturesey @cooperativa_casacarey
🧶Receive dedicated 1:1 support from an experienced knitwear technical editor, to help prepare your pattern for publication.
🧶Build your portfolio through an international creative collaboration
🧶Become part of the Knit for Wildlife alumni network.

The outcome: Open-access knitting patterns released for the Christmas holidays, alongside a publication and events. Designed to travel through knitting communities, festivals, pop culture and digital communities worldwide.

Knit for Wildlife is endorsed by the UN Ocean Decade (2021–2030) @unoceandecade

Digital residency. Global knitters welcome.

Applications open 1–21 August.

MID-RESIDENCY: LIZZY

Lizzy’s market bag is beginning to take shape, and we love where she is taking it. The starting point is the hawksbill shell. Its structure, rhythm and the pattern of the scutes. Lizzy has been translating that into lace, testing how much of the turtle’s anatomy needs to stay recognisable and where the knitting can take over 😊🐢

Because that is part of the design process too. A pattern does not need to become a scientific diagram. Sometimes the most interesting work happens in the space between accuracy and interpretation.

This piece will also feed into a larger KFW project around single-use plastic and the bags we carry every day. We can already see it having a life far beyond the residency. by @knitforwildlife

A big one for us!!

We’re incredibly happy to welcome Sandnes Garn as yarn partner for our current Knitters in Residence cohort.

They are providing yarn for our residency knitters to create their sample pieces. Supporting the point where months of research, conversations, sketches, swatches and design decisions finally become something you can actually hold, wear and knit.

For a project like Knit for Wildlife, material matters. So having one of Scandinavia’s most established yarn companies step in and support the work means a lot.

We are so grateful to Sandnes Garn for believing in the project and helping us bring this collection to life.

Thank you, @sandnesgarn We can’t wait to show you what comes off the needles 🐢🧶 by @knitforwildlife

KFW in the Seychelles newspaper 🐢🧶

Still slightly surreal to say this: Knit for Wildlife has made it into the local newspaper in the Seychelles.

@naturesey is one of our conservation partners for this cohort, and Liz wrote such a brilliant article about the residency and our focus on hawksbill sea turtles.

We are so proud of it that we even ordered copies of the newspaper, to send to the knitters 😊 And of course I asked Liz if she could send me a photo of the paper in some natural surroundings. Only one small problem; they had already cut the article out and put it on the Nature Seychelles news board 😅🥳 So her colleague very sweetly holds the cut-out in front of the newspaper. All so we could still get our little “KFW in the Seychelles newspaper” moment 😊😍

Thank you, Liz! For the article, for all the support during this residency, and for going the extra mile ❤

KFW × RAJUT NUSA 😊🧶

We’re very happy to begin a new collaboration with @rajutnusa in Indonesia.

This Sunday, founder Natalia will lead the first session: Showing us how to turn old, loved T-shirts into yarn and crochet a pouf.

That transformation is the heart of it. Taking something already worn and meaningful, cutting it differently, and giving it a completely new life.

Nat and her team have created a range of pieces using T-shirt yarn, and have also experimented with mixed recycled materials. In one collaboration with @joseph_recycling recycled bottle caps became the base of a round basket, with the sides crocheted in T-shirt yarn.

For Sunday, we’re keeping it simple and hands-on: T-shirt → yarn → pouf.

We’re opening 5 free spots for anyone who’d like to join us this Sunday at 2:30 PM UK time. Spots are first come, first served. E-mail hello@knitforwildlife.org to book your spot.

First KFW × Rajut Nusa collaboration. More to come😊 by @knitforwildlife

WIP Wednesday!
Taking the opportunity to show my progress on my Knit For Wildlife project and to admire the amazing colors of these Biches et Bûches yarns 🤩 With seasonally appropriate needle stoppers of course!

For my project I was inspired by the beautiful shell of the Hawksbill turtle and the insidious tortoiseshell trade that is threatening this species with extinction.

I’ll be sharing more information and more of my inspirations in future posts.

MID-RESIDENCY: NIKOLA

We are so excited about where Nikola’s design is heading.

For the first time in a Knit for Wildlife residency, we have a bag/clutch in the making. It already feels like such a brilliant addition to the collection.

Nikola has been developing the design around hawksbill turtles and sea sponges, and the process has been every bit as interesting as the piece itself. There have been conversations with Carla (@barbadosseaturtle) and Chris (@naturesey) about sponge species, shapes and details. And yes, at one point even Sponge Bob made an appearance😅

That back-and-forth between research, interpretation and knitting is exactly what we love about the residency process. Figuring out how real species and habitats can become something tactile, wearable and completely its own.

And then there’s the bag itself: Beautifully compact, but somehow able to fit far more than you’d ever guess by looking at it.

We love this one already! by @knitforwildlife

THE KFW STORE IS LIVE 💚

Alongside our core KFW pieces, we’re creating limited-edition collections linked to each residency.

#01 Eider Duck
#02 Hawksbill

Each collection is available only during its residency. When a new residency begins, a new numbered collection takes over. Over time, the backs of these pieces will build into a wearable archive of the species and chapters that make up Knit for Wildlife. And add another way to bring wildlife conservation out into everyday life; on trains, in cafés, at work, on campus, wherever you happen to wear it.

There are tees, hoodies, totes and more, with a few special holiday pieces still to come.

And because how we make things matters too, we chose Teemill to produce the collection. It is a circular platform also used by organisations including WWF and The Wildlife Trusts. GOTS-certified organic cotton, vegan-friendly water-based inks, renewable-energy production, plastic-free packaging, and garments designed to be returned and remade.

One transparent note on price: This kind of production costs more. KFW has added only €0 - €3.50 per item to Teemill’s base price. That small amount goes back into supporting Knit for Wildlife and the work we’re building together.

The store is live. Shop via the link in bio.
