One year ago today was Rigolet's debut! Steve calls it the muon spectrometer sweater. He says the colourwork bands remind him of the toroids on each end of the DZero experiment he worked on for his PhD. Trying not to feel like a walking muon spectrometer wearing this around him will be hard now! He's such a gem. 😂
There is a hidden pocket in the colourwork that you can tuck your keys or phone into on walks and the pocket is made in the round without steeking!!! And there are two options in the pattern to be with or without the pocket. Designed with @carolsundayknits 3ply in 13 colours.

Great Brehat is live! A place on Newfoundland’s Northern Peninsula with an unexpected pronunciation — Great “Bra-ha”. It’s believed to be named after the archipelago, Île-de-Bréhat, off the coast of France, so I made vine flowers in the lower body to look like little archipelagos. This was a ton of fun to make and I hope you enjoy it too. I used @midknitcravings Light Sock in the colors Inkwell and Love Letter. And yep, you guessed it, the colors and names together inspired me with a vision of ink spilled / painted on a love letter. ....I think I remember listening to Disturb's cover of the Sound of Silence too :)

Great Brehat is 25% off at checkout, in my Ravelry and Payhip stores until March 24. Happy making all ❤️

It’s a top-down circular yoke, worked in the round. The short row shaping for the upper back is distributed throughout the yoke depth, and incorporated into each of the single-color sections in the upper body. After the sleeve and body stitches are divided, the lower body is worked down to the hem and the sleeves are worked to the cuffs. by @knitjlee

You might be as delighted as we were to learn that our latest Maker Spotlight, Jennifer Lee McLarty (you might know her as Jennifer Beale!), has a PhD in atmospheric physics. ☁️ We just had to ask whether that scientific background manifests in her current work.

❓️Before you became a knitwear designer, you worked as an atmospheric scientist, with a special place in your heart for fog and atmospheric physics. Do you think that a scientific mindset shapes how you approach your design work in the way you work out a construction problem, or develop a colorwork motif?

"I really don't know! But at the same time, my past must have influence in some way. I just do things that feel right. Not very scientific of me :)

I've always been science and math oriented, but I've never had the traditional scientific mindset. I'm not methodical or organized, and I like ideas and their development to be spontaneous and unplanned, yet fully intentional. For my BSc, I took 6 years and did loads of astrophysics, physics, math, and ocean physics, then later in my MSc and PhD I focused on ocean and atmospheric physics, but I think I have always had a problem with not being scientifically rigorous enough. I was more obsessed with the unknown than the known, and sticking to rules based methods was so hard to do!

So I've lacked a traditional scientific mindset but I will forever have a love of physics and math... and will never get rid of my old textbooks no matter how outdated they get. Maybe it's that love that has influenced a certain geometric feel, and strangeness or structure to, many of my past designs. Like point-set topology and statistical mechanics, I loved those classes, and those classes have somehow influenced my designs in some obscure way, just don't ask me how exactly!"

Follow Jennifer and her design work at @knitjlee, and stay tuned for the next installment of her Maker Spotlight Q&A!

It's nearly Stepaside season here. Have you knit one yet?! 🥰 Aran weight, 17 stitch gauge, unique (and totally fun!) Stepaside construction, big huge pockets, and cozy as heck.

We had graupel this morning so snow shovelling in Stepaside really is right around the corner.

We’re so excited to introduce our latest Maker Spotlight: Jennifer Lee McLarty [@knitjlee], the St. John’s-based designer that you might also know as Jennifer Beale.

❓️So many of your patterns are named after places all across Newfoundland & Labrador. Do the places inspire the patterns, or is there another connection between them?

It's the cliche of "home is where the heart is" that influences all of my designs. The inspiration in most of my designs tends to be formed by a bit of a feedback loop, but the thing that originally instigates the design differs in each design. Sometimes it's the feeling a placename evokes in me, sometimes it's the literal meaning of a placename, sometimes it's a memory of a place I've been to, sometimes it's a photo, or sometimes it's the history or landmark of a place. But sometimes the inspiration switches, where I'll have an idea and then I'll search for a name that fits with the design, and then in turn the name will influence aspects of the design.

Rigolet was such a super fun one! I picked a bunch of Carol Sunday colors that I thought would look gorgeous together and swatched until it looked like The One. The swatch had a feel to it, like it had an Italian opera vibe. The name Rigolet also makes me think of an Italian opera. And it turns out that there is one, called Rigoletto! Upon reading about the place Rigolet, I learned that it is home to the longest boardwalk in North America... 9 kilometers long! That boardwalk inspired the construction of the sweater.

Signal Hill is arguably the top landmark in St. John's and it's been called "The Birthplace of Modern Communications". In 1901, the first transoceanic wireless message, “S” in Morse code, was received atop Signal Hill. So because of this, I wanted dot-like colorwork travelling the sleeves with a stormy-feeling lace in between each signal line. And, "S" is 3 dots, so each sleeve has 3 lines of dots. Since Signal Hill is perpetually embedded in fog, the main color had to be light grey!

Like all things that turn out good, ideas are just stumbled upon. The best things, the things that stick, aren't forced and they just seem to work out naturally with no expectations. by @knitjlee

One for your neck and one for your body 💗

Gripes Nest is a cowl I designed 2 years ago, even tech edited two years ago, but I had one of those paralizing mental blocks on putting it out there to the world. I don't know why I had one, or why it lifted, or why it took so long. I love it and I hope you enjoy it one day too in your favourite colors. Plus it's October! Your neck might need one sooner than you think ;)

Benton is a sweater that came out of my love for the 'Bers color (the peachy orangy brownish speckled color on the sleeves and cuffs). And then pairing it with Smudge sticks and Eggs to make some colorwork reminiscent of farmer Ben in the Berenstain bears. It a sweater that has that autumnal vibe!

Both patterns are 25% off today and tomorrow (ends tomorrow October 3!)

If I give you a code, which would be next on your needles? 1) Benton or 2) Gripes Nest? The colorwork is entirely in the round in both patterns, no steeks (...although I am in the steeking mood so you know what that means for the future if you're familiar with my past work 😉)

The Gripe on Benton combo code:

GRIPE_ON_BENTON

If you get the Benton pattern, the Gripes Nest cowl pattern is free! BUT you need to have both patterns in your cart at the same time for the code to work. Links in my bio.

Benton is top down, fingering weight at a 24 stitch gauge and I used @sweetpeaandsparrow soft sock. And I just had to put The 'Bers color on the sleeves and cuffs 🤩😍 I'm utterly in love with that one.

Gripes Nest is a cowl pattern I designed TWO years ago but had a weird mental block about publishing it. It just happens and IYKYK. But it deserves the light of day and to get knit up in all the gorgeous color combos that you can think of so I hope you make it one day and enjoy ❤️ it's DK weight and I used @windsweptfibres Some Cozy DK

Snow anyone? Hehehe. Snow from 3.5 years ago 😉 this was back when Placentia was still missing a sleeve. Photo 2 is it finished....and I love the little detail on the hem! Just reminiscing over colorwork. My sample is worked up with fairly high constrast. Some of the testknitters had gorgeous low constrast combinations.
