Whether you love Tyrolean style in particular, or all vintage knitting, “Timeless Tyrolean Knitwear” brings it all together for you. In this my first book on vintage knitting, I’ve put together a collection of 14 patterns adapted from 1930s, 1940s and early 1950s originals especially for modern knitters (swipe to see them all!) Some of the patterns are unique to this book, and it comes with all that extra information on how to recreate vintage knitting. All the way through there are in-depth guides on recreating vintage knitted style, including step-by-step images, and if you’re puzzled by which modern yarns to use there are whole sections dedicated to demystifying this and answers to many other questions on vintage yarn and patterns (not just Tyrolean designs!) Graded for a range of skills and for different yarn types, there’s something for every knitter. Short sleeves…long sleeves…no sleeves … in 4 ply, DK and Worsted If you like to create your own designs in vintage style, there’s also a whole chapter with a “menu” to inspire you to create your own individual Tyrolean style cardigan ♥️”Timeless Tyrolean Knitwear, Recreating the Vintage Style” is available from bookshops and online, and as an eBook from the publishers @thecrowoodpress (link in their bio)♥️ A huge heartfelt ♥️Thank You♥️ to everyone who has already bought the book, it’s selling twice as many copies as predicted ! OUTRAGEOUS New pattern release ! Meet “Nancy” Are you watching “Outrageous” …? I am beyond excited to share with you that this jumper, worn by Nancy Mitford, was created by me 🥰 and I am honoured and proud to see it worn so beautifully by fabulous Bessie Carter who plays the eldest of the six extraordinary Mitford sisters. I was commissioned last year by the award winning costume designer Claire Collins and worked with her brilliant team to design a 1930s style jumper for Nancy, adding a typically 1930s touch with a double-tab feature at the neckline. ♥️The result is “Nancy” and I’m delighted to offer the pattern, available exclusively from me, for you to knit your own jumper as worn by Nancy ! ♥️ To recreate Nancy’s signature style, knit her jumper in teal and cream with deco details, or of course in any colours you like ! The pattern includes options with crochet scalloped trim AND for those who prefer needles to hooks, there’s even a knitted alternative for the edge trimmings ! Knitted in a modern 4 ply, it’s an easy pattern to knit, with front and back the same, and sleeves knitted across integrally. This shaping allows for an easy fit, with instructions given for sizes from 34” to 46”. ♥️To purchase a pdf copy of the “Nancy” pattern, please send me a message or leave a comment below, and I’ll send you the details ♥️ Your support means so much to me and all your shares of this post are greatly appreciated ! 🙏🥰♥️ #outrageous #mitford #mitfordsisters #1930sknittingpatterns #1930sknittingpattern #1930sknitwear #1930sstyle #1930sfashion #1930s #themitfordsisters #streamonu #uktv #britbox #knitdesigner by @knitting4victory
Happy Book News ! “Recreating Vintage 1940s Knitwear” has been reprinted, so if you missed it so far, the second edition is now available ! 🎉🌟 🎉 It’s all thanks to your wonderful support that the First Edition is now sold out with the first 1500 copies having been sold across the globe 🙏 🌍 📚 You’ve no idea how much I appreciate this and love seeing your fabulous projects knitted from the book ! Like all books printed, some typos inevitably lurk even after countless proof reads and edits - after all, typesetters aren’t usually knitters ! 🤭- and thank you for flagging some of these so they could be rectified in the new edition If you’re looking for inspiring and ingenious ways to knit up yarn from your reserves, these 1940s patterns offer satisfying and inventive ways to “destash” whilst creating timelessly stylish, wearable garments. All 18 vintage patterns are adapted for knitting with modern yarns and sizes, and all in true Make Do spirit of economy and resourcefulness ! Each pattern is illustrated and includes step-by-step photos to guide you through the techniques needed, with the patterns graded for different skills. There is a whole section dedicated to a new simple solution for resizing ANY vintage pattern (up to 48” bust), not just the ones in the book ! The book explains in depth the context of knitting in a time of wool shortages, wartime rationing, and what motivated knitters to create such wonderful results through the 1940s 🌟📕 “Recreating Vintage 1940s Knitwear” is available in bookshops and to order online (Waterstones, WHSmith, Blackwells, Foyles, Amazon etc) and as an ebook from publishers @thecrowoodpress 📕🌟 #knittingbook #knittingbooks #newknittingbook #vintageknit #vintageknitting by @knitting4victory
Survivor, artist, linguist, seamstress, bee keeper, plant whisperer, teacher and infectious giggler♥️ How do you put into words a life of bravery, loving compassion, and creative abundance ? I can’t describe all the talents of my wonderful Mum, who was born 100 years ago today. She has left a legacy which celebrates her passionate devotion to her beloved native France, through her life-long work to grow French culture and language here in Britain. During the 1960s, she was a pioneering linguist, dedicated to spreading the learning of French to the youngest children in schools in the Black Country where we lived. We are rightly proud of our own BC language (ay we!) but Dudley school children were also amongst the first to speak French at the tender age of 5 (I bet Sir Lenny Henry remembers French with my Mum!) She started with just 5 schools, and by the time she retired in 1986, every junior school in the wide region was happily singing in French. In the mid 1980s France recognised her determined success, and awarded her the Chevalier des Palmes Académiques - the equivalent of a Knighthood. It’s one of the oldest honours bestowed to a civilian for their contribution to French cultural education. She deserved it rightfully. Jacqueline was just 13 when war came to her home in Normandie, and her native Le Havre was razed to the ground by the bombings in 1944. Liberated after 4 interminable years and the horrors of Occupation, her city had to rebuild itself from nothing. The bravery, resilience and pride of the Havrais is something my Mum had in abundance. At just 19 she was on one of the first passenger ferries to cross the Channel to England in 1946, met my Dad here and they married in 1951. She died far too young in 1991. She was a creator of beautiful paintings - award-winning murals and the most delicate of botanical and children’s book illustrations - of exquisitely intricate needlework and knitting (I am eternally grateful that she taught me!) and made, by far, the best chocolate Eclairs this side of the Channel. I always hesitate to post personal stories, but couldn’t let today go by… Toujours avec moi, ma Maman, de tout mon cœur ♥️ 🌟 by @knitting4victory
Don’t you love it when you spot the exact vintage pattern in a glorious Miss Marple episode ! Here is the lovely Hester Milewater (played by Joanna Page) in “The Blue Geranium” (haven’t we all watched it more than once 🤭) and at last I’ve found the pattern! The 1940s pattern for her fabulous jumper is a Fair Isle style knitted sideways-on for extra interest, and worked in these vibrant colours 💚🩷💙Wouldn’t it look gorgeous in so many different colour combinations! 🧶 If you’d like to purchase a copy of the pattern to recreate your own jumper, send me a dm or comment below 🧶 #missmarple #vintageknits #vintageknitting #1940sknitting #vintageknittingpatterns by @knitting4victory
Do you ever wonder which modern yarn to use for knitting vintage …? 🧶🤷🏻‍♀️ I can help !🙋🏻‍♀️ I know that one of the biggest obstacles when you want to knit from a vintage pattern is knowing which modern yarn to use… the patterns of the 1930s, 1940s and well into the 1950s, use yarn weights that don’t exist any more - or at least not by the same names. The first catch is that when they suggest 3 ply, 4 ply or 2 ply, it’s NOT the same as our modern yarns of the same name 🤔 The thicknesses of each of these has changed since then, so for example, using a widely available modern 4 ply will not give you the same results as a 1930s 4 ply yarn…which was thicker back then 🧶 Both my books contain in-depth guides on substituting modern yarns for vintage patterns and each offers different key information. “MASTERING VINTAGE YARNS AND PATTERNS” is one of the main sections in “Timeless Tyrolean Knitwear” where I explain and simplify all of this in detail - I even give you photos of actual samples of vintage yarn knitted up in like-for-like comparisons with best-match modern equivalents. You can see all the yarn weights of the original vintage patterns compared side by side with modern yarns so that you can choose the substitute that works best for your vintage project…with extra guides on quantities needed, needle sizes … and more ! This is just one of the vintage knitting challenges I aim to simplify in my books which have a wealth of guidance … not to mention all the glorious Tyrolean and 1940s Make Do patterns of course ! “Timeless Tyrolean Knitwear” and “Recreating Vintage 1940s Knitwear” are both available now from booksellers and to order online in time for Christmas. Happy Knitting ! #vintageknitting #knittingbook #knittingbooks #vintageknits #vintageknittingpatterns by @knitting4victory
🍁 It’s autumn (no really it is!) and the Broadway Beret pattern is a simple way to work Fair Isle panels together (none of the huge number of stitches all in one go!) 🍁 The pattern is specially designed for knitters who want to build up their skills in Fair Isle knitting on a smaller scale, with easy instructions and a full colour chart. In true vintage style, the Broadway Beret is made up of segments, each knitted separately, then put together into the finished shape. This was already a popular way of making berets in the 1940s, (it’s much easier than a whole beret in one go ! 😉) and I’ve adapted the shaping and stitch pattern for modern knitting in 4 ply yarn. If you’d like to make your own vintage style Fair Isle beret in easy steps, you’ll enjoy the Broadway Beret! 🧶🧶To purchase a pdf copy of the pattern please send me a dm 🧶🧶 🥰Happy Fair Isle Knitting ! #fairislehat #fairisleberet #knittedberet #fairisleknitting #vintageknitting by @knitting4victory

One thing that keeps me quiet for a good few weeks is a full-on 1930s pattern challenge … and this one has it all ♥️ Like so many elaborately designed patterns of the time, it keeps you guessing, trips you up, has acres of moss stitch 😵‍💫has you unravelling and counting for hours. But in the end, it’s so rewarding and a true 1930s classic, complete with a bow collar that Miss Lemon would gladly rock ! The collar is fixed down in the original pattern by two buttons, but I’ve made it detachable so it can be adjusted, using two real 30s French Art Deco glass buttons that have come from my grandmother’s treasures. (I think she’d love this!) Knitted in fine pure wool 4 ply (this one is Cascade 220 Fingering) I would say it’s not for the feint hearted, (especially if you need to re-size) but a great project to have achieved ! *🧶 The pattern is from the fabulous collection by @myvintagewish 🥰 It’s been an absolute pleasure to knit for the lovely @ahansdottir who has waited so patiently, and it’s now on its way home ! *🧶Please note: I’ve given details of the pattern and yarn used, but cannot offer any coaching or advice for knitters on this project🧶 #vintageknit #vintageknitting #vintageknittingpatterns #1930sstyle #1930sfashion by @knitting4victory
Knitting with cotton is a pain. A lot of actual pain. There’s good news, and bad news… First the bad news. There’s very little anyone can suggest as a relief for the pain to our hands caused by cotton yarn - it’s an occupational hazard of knitting with it ! The causes are inherent in the fibre which has zero stretch. And after all that hard work, it loses its shape so easily ! 🤨(it’s not cotton’s fault …it just doesn’t have much of a memory for shape! ) Now for the good news ! 🥳 There are a few ways you can add some of that elusive elasticity back into your knitting with cotton. It won’t help the aching hands, sadly, but should make the process more rewarding with an end result that makes it more worth while ! 🧶 Part 1 - How to give cotton more s-t-r-e-t-c-h (Part 2 to follow …) There is a vintage tried and tested way of making sure that ribbing knitted in cotton keeps its shape and elasticity, as worked with this first example knitted in a fine 4 ply cotton. It’s really simple to do, and really effective ! You work into the back of the stitches so that they “twist”, lessening their tendency to loosen. That’s it ! If you work into the back of all the Knit stitches (swipe to see what this looks like on the needles with the purple yarn) you’ll achieve a “springy” texture which will already make a difference. If you want to get the maximum possible result with this technique, you can work into the back of all the stitches, K and P (purl), as in the first image (the dark cream welt of the striped knitting and the next one in white) I always use this technique for the welt of cotton knits, it really works ! You can see the difference this makes visually, and elasticity-wise it’s a winner 🌟 #knitterstips #tipsforknitters #knittingtips #vintageknitting #cottonyarns by @knitting4victory
A fine Fair Isle isn’t only for Fridays (or winter!) Fair Isle knitted in cotton keeps the colours very distinct rather than the softer merging of fibres knitted in wool, and it does make them look crisp and clear. I used a rust, aubergine, almond green, blush pink and pale yellow on an ivory background for this summery palette. I knitted this one in very fine cotton, from one of Kim Hargreaves’ wonderful patterns “Grosvenor House” from her 1991 Collection. I especially love the shawl collar knitted in moss stitch, with its 1930s inspired cropped shape and style. @kimbykimhargreaves I’m generally more of a woolly wool girl because I find cotton can be hard on the hands to knit, without any flexibility, but I know it has its advantages in these warmer days ! In my next couple of posts I’ll share some tips on taming knitting with cotton yarn, as I know I’m not alone in the challenge. Keep cool and keep knitting ! #fairisleknit #fairisleknitting #vintageknit #vintageknitting #vintageknits by @knitting4victory
75 years ago in the summer of 1951 The Festival of Britain was in full swing 🇬🇧rationing had finally ended (mostly!) and as well as commemorating 100 years since the Great Exhibition of 1851, this was a real celebration of post-war “Britain Can Make It”🇬🇧 not least for our national wool industry 🐑 🧶 Patons and Baldwins published this cheerful booklet “Festival Knitting” in their wonderful series. What a great achievement that they are still one of our favourite wool brands to this day, (even if they have been swallowed up by the DMC giants) Thank goodness or where would I be ?! 🧶 And most important of all for me … 75 years ago today in Paris, on 4th August 1951 my wonderful Mum and Dad were married 🌸💖💍🇬🇧🇫🇷 #1950sstyle #1950sfashion #1950sknitting by @knitting4victory
