Ok, so a quick question for the Insta”bee” family. What do you all recommend I do with the frames I pulled out of dead hives? Some are in gnarly shape, half eaten by something (mouse I presume), others have uncapped nectar or pollen in there. Do I throw them into new hives, do I just throw them out? Appreciate any feedback. Thank you! by @knoxfarm007

Happy Easter everyone! Well hope springs eternal. I lost 3 hives during the winter. I just installed 6 new hives today, giving me a total of 9 hives. Despite my best efforts, I really have no clue what I am doing with these bees. I try to do everything right, then put it in the good Lord’s hands and hope for the best! by @knoxfarm007

So it looks like this hive died due to the cold weather. Pulled two frames out of the failed hive. Looks like the bees tried to cluster until the very end. The hive had an untouched candy board, so they did not starve. They were treated for mites and there were no signs of mice in the hive. I am thinking some of the huge fluctuations in temperature we had during the winter may have killed the hive. Strange how some of the hives survived and some did not. Bee keeping will always remain a mystery to me. by @knoxfarm007

Well, it’s that time of year, inspect the hives after the winter, see which hives survived, which ones did not. So the verdict is in, 3 hives survived, 3 did not. This hive housed a mouse all winter. Not sure why the others did not survive. I did everything proper for the winter, mite treatments, food supply, mice guards, insulate the hives, etc. C’est La vie, at this point I just roll with it and hope to catch some swarms in a few weeks! by @knoxfarm007

So Spring has arrived…..what does that mean? WORK!!! Putting hive boxes together, getting ready for 5 new queens and her brood. Also planning to be ready for a few swarms this season. One thing I have learned about bees, you need to be a few steps ahead. Need to be prepared for whatever surprises the bees throw you! by @knoxfarm007

Ok so now I start to get worried. Usually around this time every year the weather starts to show glimpses of Spring. Typically I can take a peak into the bee hives, see how the bees fared during the winter, check on their food supplies. Like other places in the Northeast today, we are getting hammered with snow. And the forecast for the next week is more cold weather. So I will not be able to check on the bees for awhile now. Do the bees have enough food to survive these last few weeks before the weather warms up? I don’t know, but will find out soon. by @knoxfarm007

Getting ready to add 4-5 new hives this spring on the Farm. Spring is such a funny time here in the Hudson Valley for bees. Invariably some hives do not survive the winter (I am always amazed at all that any hives survive the sub freezing weather). But the sadness of losing hives is compensated by capturing swarms and beginning the hive process all over again. Never boring! by @knoxfarm007

Ok, so all the bee hives are “winterized” for the winter. Did mite treatments in the fall, added the candy boards, added moisture boards to eliminate moisture buildup, wrapped the hives in insulation, added additional foam board insulation, made sure the mouse guards are battened down, and lastly put barbecue covers over the hives. Will it work….who knows? We try our best to keep the ladies alive over the winter. I am always amazed when I see bee activity in March when the surviving bees come out for cleansing flights. Can’t believe they survived the brutal winter! by @knoxfarm007

Ok so this happened. I went outside to look at the hives (ignore the mess) and the bees were flying around going crazy. Not a swarm, that happened already. What do you guys think, some major robbing going on? Appreciate any feedback. by @knoxfarm007
