DANCE: a selection of photos found where looking at the images makes you hear the music playing in the moment frozen in time. 1. a dancer on stage during a samira toufic gig, 2. photo found at a cairo flea market. no further information, 3. kamal keila and sharhabil ahmed dancing on stage. keila is widely credited to introducing dancing as part of a live presentation of a singer in popular sudanese music. 4. guests dancing during a black coats gig. the black coats were the first band mady al houssainy played in, 5. the dancefloor during a gig of the flowers band, early 1970s cairo, 6. nubian singer abdallah rock on stage. his live shows always included a number of dancers and as a matter of fact abdallah rock started his career as a dancer before becoming a singer himself in later years. by @habibifunk

PLAYLISTS: 4 of the new playlists we added across all plattforms. a few people have been asking us for a catalogue playlist with all songs we ever released and this has been finally added with al massrieen on the cover. „instrumental grooves“ is a selection of songs if you’re looking to set the mood with a selection of lebanese library, egyptian jazz, algerian soundtracks and much more with libya’s the free music on the cover. last but not least we added „low tempo, slow pace“ with a selection of mellow and moody songs to unwind from songs from our catalogue to fairuz, ziad rahbani and @kazdouramusic with @rogerfakhr on the cover. last but not least our friend @machi7k did a guest curation which can also be found everywhere. and as mentioned in the previous post we have worked on adding the playlists on a number to smaller plattforms people have been asking about such as deezer, anghami, tidal and qobuz (which should be in place by next week). PLAYLISTS (link in bio): we spend quite some time working on our playlists in the last weeks, most notably on diversifying the plattforms they are available on, by adding deezer, anghami, youtube music and tidal (qobuz is coming very soon) to the main plattforms. we also added 3 new new playlists that our colleague @fatimasab.zahra curated (a whole discography one, a (s)low tempo selection and one dedicated to instrumental grooves) and our friend @machi7k did a guest curation. last but not least we updated the main „essentials“ playlist. the track featured in the video is „longa“ by al massrieen. enjoy! by @habibifunk

KHALED MELODY (Habibi Funk 031): Khaled Al Melody was one of the major reggae artists in 1990s Libya and his song „Jani Bingol“ was featured in our Libyan compilation last year. In order to retrace his story and legacy we spoke with Ahlam Al Melody, Khaled’s widow, over a voice call from her home in Tripoli in preparation of our Libyan compilation last year.. She shared with us memories of Khaled’s life and his enduring impact on Libyan music. Born in Tripoli in 1962, Khaled’s passion for music began at a young age. He started playing the accordion in primary school, and his admiration for Bob Marley played a significant role in shaping his musical tastes. This early connection and admiration for reggae would later inspire Khaled to blend Jamaican influences with traditional Libyan sounds. In high school, Khaled joined Ibrahim Hesnawi’s band, Abnaa Alkhala (“Cousins”), marking the start of his professional music career (…) Eventually he formed his own band, Sons of the Desert, and turned to the electrical organ as a central instrument. This versatile instrument, capable of mimicking multiple sounds and adding drum beats, became a cornerstone of Libya’s evolving music scene (…). His particular style and work ethic eventually became known as the “Melody School of Music”. In 1987, the band released their first cassette, Alayam, and even traveled to Morocco to perform it. “He was the best electrical organ player in Libya,” Ahlam said with pride. “He had a way of playing, closing his eyes and moving his hands, that people had never seen before. When he toured in Morocco, people would tell him, ‘We’ve never seen anyone play like this (….)“. Reflecting on their life together she describes that he has been and will always be a lasting presence in her and her family’s daily lives. “Before I leave the house, I have to put his cassettes on. Every Friday, when the family comes together, his voice is there with us. It’s like he never left. Every time we listen to his songs, it’s like he’s still here,” she said. “That’s the power of his music. It has lived on for decades after his passing.” by @habibifunk

CAIRO 🇪🇬 RECORDSTORES : Going to Egypt next week so we figured it’s a good time to update our record store list for the city alongside some new photos. Cairo is still the heart of the record shop culture in the Egypt. You can start by visiting @zaza.mazzika.music.shop in Shobra, he has a new shop location, text him for a location pin. Then there is a cluster of shops in Zamalek district such as @sherrys.vinyl (the store originally started by Shadia Farag. They have a second branch in Maadi too) and @mazzika_zaman and @nagham_zaman_ are also great. Zein has a shop there too, not sure whether he is on instagram though and also @saadpicassoo has a stall there.. @retrograde_store_ still is a great option right around the corner with a nice ever evolving shop. In Maadi you can also visit @yellowtaperec and on saturdays the flea market at cinema Diana in downtown sometimes delivers great records. by @habibifunk
