“Pocket relics: the charms we worship” is my recent new solo exhibition at @kuiyuangallery in Guangzhou (China) curated by Patricia Tingchen Li, and as a result of my artist residency at @swatchartpeacehotel .The exhibition will be open for visits until December 28th.This exhibition present Koctel´s most recent series featuring the intimate objets that populate our daily lives. He examines our contemporary relationship with material culture: how seemingly insignificant items have the ability to take on extraordinary emotional and psychological power. Though these objects - smartphones, hanging plush toys, lipsticks, and more - are physically tiny, when we slip them into our pockets, we carry not just their material form, but also the affection, security, and fragments of our identities they embody. Koctel´s most recent series grows out of this keen interest in observing everyday China through a cross-cultural perspective. His engagement with China´s artistic communities began in 2017, through collaborative workshops at Nanjing university of the Arts. Since then, he has expanded his presence across China - creating large scale projects, leading workshops, and participating in art fairs and exhibitions in Hong Kong, Beijing, Chengdu, Shanghai and Guangzhou. His recent artist residency at the Swatch Peace art hotel afforded him an extended period to fully immerse himself in the chinese context, resulting in this new series of works that asks how we all reflect on material culture amid China´s complex navigation of traditional values and rapid modernization. This past weekend marked the opening of my new solo project, “Foodmosa,” at @axisgallery.tw curated by Catherine Ma, as the result of my artist residency at @taipeiartistvillage A huge thank to the entire Axis Gallery team for their incredible support and professionalism. I’ll be back at the beginning of August to give a personal introduction to the project, you’re all more than welcome!“FOODMOSA” is a wordplay filled with sensory imagination, combining “Food” with “Formosa” (the historic name for Taiwan). This title not only echoes the wonder European explorers once felt toward this “Beautiful Island” but also marks a contemporary interpretation of Taiwanese culinary culture by Spanish artist Koctel.As an artist visiting Taiwan for the first time, Koctel was deeply drawn to the island’s profound and multi-layered cultural “rhythm.” He views Taiwan as a massive canvas of visual collage, where the neon lights of night markets, the aromas of street food, and the tropical climate all serve as inspiration for his work.Employing his signature surrealist brushstrokes and saturated colors, Koctel transforms daily diet into visual symbols with artistic tension. Through his iconic “Citrus Eyes,” he captures the unique soul of this island—both tart and sweet—as it exists amid the blend of diverse cultures.“FOODMOSA” is more than just a depiction of Taiwan’s landscape; it is a visual feast woven from appetite, color, and vitality. Axis Gallery 很榮幸於 2026 年 7 月推出西班牙藝術家Koctel個展「Foodmosa」。本次展出作品圍繞於街頭百態、美食、水果與街頭文化，以明亮的色彩和充滿趣味性的圖像，創造出具有當代城市的視覺意象與帶有古典風格的幻想敘事。Koctel本名Fernando Hernández Arboleda，1989年出生於西班牙格拉納達（Granada），並成長於塞維亞（Seville）。從小Koctel就展現其對繪畫和塗鴉的濃厚興趣，尤其是塗鴉這種不拘形式、不拘主題的創作方式，讓他得以在創作中展現其天馬行空的想像力；而盛產柑橘的塞維亞，這個從小居住的地方，也給予藝術家源源不絕的創作靈感，並逐漸形成極具個人標誌的柑橘眼睛形象。由於受到日本動畫的啟發，Koctel 善於使用色彩繽紛且帶有誇張視覺張力的畫面來營造喧鬧的景象。本次在台北的展出「Foodmosa」，結合了藝術家旅居世界各地的街頭觀察，以及他在台灣的現地創作，為台灣這個美麗之島留下他的深刻記憶。畫面上那些光滑亮眼的色澤、誇張的人物形象與鮮豔欲滴的水果，不僅是美好童年的投射，更隱喻著現代人面對資訊爆炸與感官超載時的刺激與焦慮。 Koctel 透過這些迷人又略帶酸澀的視角，成功形塑出專屬於這個時代的街頭風俗誌。展覽日期｜Exhibition Date2026.7.10-2026.8.30藝術家｜ Artist@koct3l 展覽地點｜LocationAxis Gallery台北市大安區潮州街94號 by @koct3l

“Superbia” — 90 x 120 cm / Mixed media on canvas, 2026On the occasion of my solo exhibition “Mvndvs Paradoxvs” at @renaceart I wanted to delve deeper into a series of medieval engravings titled “The Seven Deadly Sins,” in which, through multiple symbolisms and paradoxes, the capital sins are represented in a visual and explicit way. In my case, I wanted to extrapolate this idea to the context of the 21st century and explore how, even today, these archetypes resonate more strongly than ever.During the late Middle Ages, the Seven Deadly Sins became a recurring subject in European religious art, appearing in manuscripts, murals, and engravings as moral allegories intended to expose the weaknesses of human nature. Among them, Superbia — Pride — was considered the original and most dangerous sin, the root from which all others emerged. It was often personified as a crowned or elegantly dressed figure contemplating itself in a mirror, surrounded by symbols of vanity, excess, power, and spiritual corruption. These compositions were intentionally theatrical and grotesque, combining beauty with decay in order to reveal the paradox between outward perfection and inner emptiness. Through this work, I reinterpret those medieval visual codes within a contemporary landscape dominated by ego, image culture, hyper-consumption, and digital self-worship, questioning how the aesthetics of power and vanity continue to shape modern identity.
