KODA presents ”Kathleen McDermott: Not a Gadget,” a solo exhibition by Kathleen McDermott (@kit_the_robot).

KODA House 407b, Governors Island
On view October 3-November 1, 2026
Opening: Saturday, October 3 at 3-5pm

For decades, McDermott has been hacking and recrafting consumer electronics into machines that seem to have a mind of their own. Drawing on cybernetic theory, philosophy, and the logic of the Looney Tunes, Not a Gadget probes her conflicted relationship between the body and technology, spiritualism and cynicism, community and isolation.

On view: selections from Urban Armor (2014–2019), artifacts from Repair Shop (2025), and new work-in-progress with @southbronxunite.

Open Studios! This Saturday, October 17 at 11am-5pm at
KODA House 407b Governors Island (@governorsisland)! Artist studios: Roya Amigh (@royaamigh), and Kathleen McDermott (@kit_the_robot).

Exhibition on view “Kathleen McDermott: Not a Gadget” where a theme of anti-productivity runs throughout, a quiet protest to a quantification-obsessed work culture enabled by modern technologies as the artist shifts between observer/skeptic and active user of the tools. taken in Governors Island by @koda.lab

Join us for the activation of Rowan Renee’s (@brooklyntintype) ”A loom for tender(ils)” on Saturday, October 24, 2026 at 1-4pm outside of KODA House 407B, Governors Island.

Capacity: 12 people
RSVP: Required (link in bio!)

A loom for tender(ils) transforms the tree grove surrounding KODA House into a secret garden of tapestry looms designed to engage the public in deeper conversation with each other, their inner landscapes, and the natural environment.

Weaving brings attention to the body through subtle, repetitive motions, opening a channel to feelings that may be difficult to put into words. Building on Rowan Renee’s ongoing workshops and community engagement projects using weaving as a catalyst for healing, the activation invites participants to experience the work collectively through conversation, collaboration, and play.

Originally commissioned for Socrates Sculpture Park (@socratespark) as part of The Socrates Annual 2025: Up/Rooted, the installation consists of three outdoor looms situated among the trees in front of KODA House. taken in Governors Island by @koda.lab

Join us this Saturday, September 19 at 3pm for an Artist Talk with current Artist-in-Residence Roya Amigh (@royaamigh) & curator Monika Fabijanska (@monikafabijanska) at KODA House 407b on Governors Island.

Event organized on the occasion of Roya Amigh: Presence of the Absent, a solo exhibition examining the fragile terrain where women’s movements, personal histories, and collective memory intersect.

Amigh constructs layered surfaces from transparent paper and lace before attaching small drawings, mirror fragments, and pieces of cloth. She then cuts these surfaces apart, folds some fragments into three-dimensional forms, and stitches them back together, leaving deliberate gaps. Connections are repeatedly undone and remade, allowing relationships between fragments to shift as the work develops. Removed pieces are never discarded; what feels unnecessary in one work becomes essential in another. Through this slow cycle of cutting, mending, and reassembling, subtraction becomes a generative force, suggesting that nothing is ever entirely lost.
