Conservation isn't just about wildlife — it's about culture too.

In my line of work with @intrepidtravel, I get the privilege of spending time with the Hadza / Hadzabe tribe of northern Tanzania — one of the last true hunter-gatherer communities on earth, and considered East Africa's first nation.
Unlike the Bantu, Nilotic, and Cushitic groups who migrated into the region, the Hadza have no known migration history. They've simply always been here.

Every visit leaves me in awe of how they've sustained this way of life for tens of thousands of years — even as it gets harder by the year. Shrinking wildlife, expanding development, and a changing climate are squeezing a lifestyle that predates almost everything we call "civilization."

The big question is, how do we help cultures like this keep existing — on their own terms? Less interference, more intention. Supporting conservation that protects their land and the animals they depend on. Choosing tourism that respects boundaries instead of turning people into a spectacle. Listening more than we extract.

Share your thoughts on this. Let's get discussing. taken in Lake Eyasi by @koinemakumi

Not long ago, I wrapped up 5 unforgettable days in Tanzania, joining @intrepidtravel Travel's EMEA MD Zina Bencheikh and her wonderful family on safari — part work trip, part pinch-me moment.

Highlights:
• Unveiled our new safari vehicles at the new Tanzania office (they're even shinier in person)
• Visited PWC's Naramatisho women's group — a masterclass in women's resilience and community-led growth
• Danced with the Datoga and Hadzabe tribes
• Took in the jaw-dropping game drives across Ngorongoro and the Serengeti
• Cheered on our favourite World Cup teams under the African sky.

Beyond the memories, it was a genuine deep-dive into East Africa's travel industry — the people, the opportunities, and what's next for responsible tourism in the region.
5 days, countless insights, and a whole lot of gratitude. 🧡

You think you're just out here navigating the wild, and then you look over and catch @koinemakumi completely in his element.

We took a trip down to the Mara for the recent event, and honestly, the energy was unmatched. I managed to snap a few candid shots of him when he absolutely had no idea I was playing "paparazzi" 😅😅

First, I caught him tearing up the dirt roads, looking like an absolute explorer conquering the wilderness in slide 3 and honestly, the black-and-white vibe in pic 4 makes the exact same moment look like a scene straight out of an adventure movie🤪

At the beginning of the race, he was still completely locked in. I caught him in slide 2 looking intensely focused, probably plotting his next trail route (or just tensing about the Mara hot sun 🤦‍♂️ ). And of course, a true modern-day adventurer is nothing without his tech—caught him red-handed in slide 1 checking his phone mid-pitstop. 🤫

The Mara never misses, and honestly, neither did @tonny on the two bikes!

He got a story with the blue bike🤣🤣

Anyway, that's part of my photography short story..........

Day 6 of the trip, and we've been incredibly lucky on our game drives so far.

With recent rains, the grass has grown towering high — beautiful, but it’s made spotting cheetahs nearly impossible. By 12:30 PM, we were almost ready to call it for lunch… when something popped up out of the chest high sea of green grass, standing tall on a termite mound.

Bang! There she was — exactly what we'd been hoping for.

A cheetah mum with her two cubs. This growing teenager was full of energy, even climbing up the tire cover of another jeep right in front of us.

Day well and truly made. taken in Serengeti National Park, Tanzania by @koinemakumi

A cold morning on the Mornington Peninsula — bracing the drizzle, soaking in the beauty of the lake behind me, and keeping my binoculars close, hoping for a few new lifers.

Photo Dump Alert!

20 photos. A springy Kangaroo, a smart cookatoo and a whole lot of global talent in Melbourne.

Just got back from the @intrepidtravel Global Summit week – a surreal mashup of passionate people, city laneways, weird wildlife and the beautiful game of Australia football.

Met incredible humans from every corner of the planet. Walked cobblestones that smelled like coffee and ambition and sampled every beer there is in the city

Melbourne, you absolute delight. Between the graffiti-covered alleys, the sky scrappers and the birds that paint the sky with their beautiful colours– I’m officially charmed.

This isn’t a goodbye. It’s a see you soon!! Next time with better football skills. taken in Melbourne, Australia by @koinemakumi

The sky was heavy and gray, threatening to unleash a downpour at any moment. The animals had scattered, seeking shelter, leaving the savanna very quiet. We ventured deeper, our eyes fixed on the distant lightning, wondering if we should turn back.

Just as we were about to head to camp, a flicker of movement caught our eye. A tail, wagging lazily from the branch of a towering sausage tree. Bingo!!.

There she was, in all her beauty, completely unfazed by the storm or us. She had spent the day alone, just the way she likes it, and now she was gracing us with her presence. All worry about the rain vanished. We spent the rest of the afternoon with this queen as she occasionally nibbled on her lunch, perched perfectly on the edge of one of the branches.
