EMPATHY AS A LISTENING PRACTICE

A live sound performance that treats listening as a compositional method. Using a directional microphone, the artist extracts fragments of sound from the audience and surrounding space and processes them in real time through analogue synthesisers, a drone machine and effects pedal.
The performance explores empathy through the uneasy line between attentive listening and intrusion.

🥷 ABOUT THE ARTIST
Anastasia Koroleva is an interdisciplinary artist and researcher working across sound, technology and space. Using directional sound, electromagnetic systems and physical processes, she explores how sound shapes perception, organises movement and mediates social interaction. Her work has been presented at ZKM, HELLERAU, CTM Festival and Ars Electronica, among others. Based in Tenerife, Spain.

Nine mechanical metronomes, each moving at its own tempo, create an ever-changing landscape of rhythms. As the mechanisms gradually drift out of sync and wind down, a directional microphone captures individual pulses, which are woven into a live electronic composition. Unexpected rhythms emerge, overlap, and disappear, until the last metronome falls silent.

Rhythmic Drift explores time, chance, and the beauty of imperfection through the delicate interplay of mechanical and electronic sound.

Alex Pleninger & Anastasia Koroleva — Rhythmic Drift
October 25, 19:00

Ten mechanical metronomes, each set to a different tempo, create an evolving rhythmic environment. As their mechanisms gradually unwind, the rhythms drift, interact, and eventually fade. Using a directional microphone, the performer selects sounds in real time, while the composer responds with a live electronic layer. The piece ends when the mechanisms themselves come to a stop.

*Due to unforeseen circumstances, Sergei Komarov will perform in place of Alexander Pleninger.

Robert Schwarz — Stridulations / Tymbals

Continuing his exploration of acoustic communication in insects, Robert Schwarz focuses on the sound production of cicadas. Field recordings are combined with speculative electronic resynthesis, shifting the boundaries between natural and synthetic sound and creating a richly textured listening experience. by @korolevasound

Empathic Field is a site-specific live audiovisual performance that explores observation as an act of empathy. Live camera, microphone and environmental inputs translate movement, sound and presence into ever-evolving responses, while autonomous streams of image and sound turn the architecture into a responsive, living body.

How can intimacy emerge through attentive observation, autonomy and respectful distance? The performance proposes observation not as control, but as a form of attention that changes the observer too.

The exhibition runs 15–31 October at feldfünf.

Sound Cage premiere at Global Sonic Research Residency @zkmkarlsruhe and @hellerau_ . Curated by @lealukatiziana

Thanks to everyone who made this idea possible and supported me.
I’m so grateful to be part of this beautiful showcase, it was an amazing experience!

It was wonderful to meet the other artists at the residency @portraitxo and @phpaqr

Sound Cage transforms the space into an invisible auditory labyrinth, where discrete sound vectors guide participants through attentive listening. The listener’s journey acts as a metaphor for digital and social networks, revealing how signals isolate and intersect. At intersections, overlapping streams produce unpredictable sonic fusions, forming transient sonic bubbles that highlight the paradox of isolation through connection.

The installation positions the body as a perceptual interface, making movement a method of exploration. Sound Cage: A Sonic Labyrinth of Connection investigates how spatial sound can mediate relational experience, creating fleeting moments of shared presence and perceptual resonance. by @korolevasound

One to wander, two to dream,
Three steps deep in a pixel stream.
Four to listen, five to play,
Six for the bloom to enlight your way.
In seven days, eight worlds will grow,
Nine paths twist where you may go.
Ten thoughts will crush, eleven arise—
One hatch for all, no compromise!
A lava lake lurks, don’t take a dive,
Meet two-in-one, it’ll help you survive.
Step carefully, don’t go astray,
The Garden of Wandering is here to play! by @korolevasound
