kosoku @ METEOR、Tokyo

Having followed the METEOR gallery and the My Famicase exhibition that they host for years, it’s always been a dream of mine to enter a work of my own. This year, I was lucky enough to enter among 249 other participants from all across Japan and the rest of the world. Getting to see the exhibition in Tokyo and meeting the gallery owner, Satoshi Sakagami, was amazing and enlightening.

My Famicase represents an increasingly rare opportunity for artists of any background to display work publicly for such a cool medium and gallery space. Long live METEOR!

Title: 万能電脳フラッシャー Universal Cyber Flasher
Entry number: 94
Description: A black-market cyber flasher from 2226. Jack it into any mech’s service port to reboot, reprogram or kill its system. This rare prototype model may have been a hacker’s tool or a relic from a defunct research programme. No one knows for sure.

Universal Cyber Flasher explores a future where technology has outlived the systems that created it. In a sparse world of decaying machines and execrable maintenance tools, even a small cartridge like this can become an heirloom, weapon, or myth.

CODEX/C

Ōrihon-fold publication w/ acrylic sheath - FMP

I created CODEX/C for @istdworldwide 's ‘Books Still’ student assessment brief to explore digital-age reading through @hotemogf 's essay, Domain Naming, which examines identity and self-expression online through something as deceptively simple as domain names.

From the beginning of my work on this brief, I aimed to explore themes of internet creativity, expression, and the associated politics and ethics. I chose this text because I am deeply passionate about utilising the internet as a force for good, especially in art and design communities, so this publication became a way to spark conversation about building a better web and advocate for a more ethical online culture.

CODEX/C plays with the overlap of digital and physical media. I used a Japanese Ōrihon concertina fold (a kind of codex) that unfurls into one continuous page, echoing the chaos of navigating unformatted web pages.

The name combines “Codex” (the format) and “Codec” (compressing data), exploring how online identities are built and limited. To protect the fragile fold, I designed an acrylic sheath with a cutout that teases the contents - a nod to tech materials and a symbol of expression resisting the boxes set by online systems.

China on film (⁠ ⁠╹⁠▽⁠╹⁠ ⁠)

At the very end of my time at university this year, only weeks away from graduation, I was surprisingly invited to study for 3 weeks at Nanjing University of the Arts as part of a cultural exchange programme. Even though we were based in Nanjing, we were able to explore Nantong and Shanghai also, which was incredible, I loved everywhere we visited, I implore everyone to see Nanjing and the wider Yangtze area at some point in your lives.

A huge thanks to all involved, I'm already longing to return to Nanjing and beyond.

A dream destination since I can remember, first booked to come a few years ago, then COVID happened. Second times a charm, we finally made it. Thank you Floyd for letting us stay with you and making this happen!!

My first unit at university, I was tasked with creating a zine around the theme of the creative self. The text I chose is by Rod Judkins, a lecturer in creativity. His book delves into what it is to be creative, how creativity has driven people to do extraordinary things, and how to become creative ourselves.

I thoroughly enjoyed this project and the freedom it gave me to dive deeply into my favourite bits of graphic design, pop culture and creativity in general.

Been meaning to do a 1-Bit exercise ever since I got my PocketStation. Got around to it today and it's been a lovely experience. 32x32 is a very limiting size but it pushes you to get creative with how you use the space available and ultimately let's you procure some really cool and original results.

Long live PocketStation!
