Hey peeps in Florida, consider joining us in the Florida Keys this weekend for the Peregrine Days Migration Celebration @curryhammockofficial State Park in Marathon, FL. There will be informational displays, educational programs, and free bird walks led by professional birders and park interpretive staff. October 10th is the statistical peak of the world’s largest Peregrine Falcon migration over the middle Keys & it also coincides with the 2026 Global Big Day so we will be searching for as many birds as we can for our lists! On hand assisting with bird finding and education will be the @floridakeyshawkwatch counters, staff from the Hawk Migration Association, @ravenbirdingapparel, @kowasportingopticsus and Florida State Parks. Come join the event and let the birding professionals help you locate & identify even more than the Merlin Birding App can! ;) The day promises loads of fun and a whole lot of birds (in most years thousands of birds of prey migrate over on this peak weekend. A little birdy told me today is International Vulture Awareness day, which is a holiday I can wholly get behind because nature’s clean up crew rocks! Genetic analysis suggests new world vultures are more closely related to storks than old world species despite the similarities in features & behaviors. Our California Condor (living locally in parts of California and Arizona) is critically Endangered still, but happily it is steadily increasing thanks to successful conservation initiatives. In the Old World most vultures are critically endangered due to poisoning and other factors. The first composite is New World with a Lesser Yellow-headed Vulture taken in Panama at top right with similar Turkey Vulture & Black Vulture images from my ‘hood. Our ambassador & friend Alex Harper @alexkharper is a familiar face. Last year he guided the Kowa team and David Lindo @theurbanbirder, sharing local birds & wildlife that can be found just outside of Las Vegas which included David's lifer Crissal Thrasher! Check out the fantastic short film "The Great Depletion" he and colleague Austin (and "Saint Sam") just released. Full of great natural history information and videos, the duo offer first hand insight on the challenges wildlife (and they) face as they traverse 112 miles across the entire Las Vegas basin. A highly enjoyable and informative watch!

We had an excellent show at the Southeast Arizona Birding Festival last week with a lot of enthusiastic responses to our new BD III & SV III binocular models. Our digiscoping workshop was well attended with great interest and questions. Others swung by for assistance in trouble shooting adapter woes which we were able to sort as well! Join the fun at the Southeast Arizona Birding Festival August 12-16, 2026 presented by the @tucsonbirdalliance . Packed with field trips to local birding hotspots, nature presentations and instructional workshops, the festival has something for everyone.

Kowa staff will be on hand at the vending area and will be giving a hands on workshop on "Easy Digiscoping" at nearby Reid Park at 6:30 AM. Sign up for the workshop at the festival website and visit the free vending area to see displays and new products.
