243/362 The man who saved a king had no rank, no land, and no protection.

A note for anyone confused about the timeline, because I got this question in my own research:

Edo State is not where the name comes from. It's the other way round. Oba Ewuare renamed the capital city Edo around 1470, after the man who died hiding him. The name spread from the city, to the people, to the language.

Edo State the government entity only arrived on 27 August 1991, when Bendel State was split into Edo State and Delta State. And Bendel itself was young: the territory was Benin Province under the British, then became the Mid-Western Region in 1963 after the people there voted to leave the Western Region, then Mid-Western State in 1967, then was renamed Bendel in 1976 (a mash-up of BENin and DELta).

So from 1897 to 1991, almost a century, no unit on the official map carried the name Edo. Colonial and postcolonial administrators used Benin, Mid-West, Bendel. The people kept saying Edo the entire time, and eventually the map caught up.

So Edo State is bigger than the Edo language. Esan, Afemai, Owan and Akoko-Edo people live there too and speak related but separate Edoid languages. When I say Edo here, I mean the Bini language of Benin City, which the state was named after.

A huge thank you to @koyoapp because I wouldn’t have been able to practice Igbo daily without them! The best part is that you can learn so many other African Languages on the app spanning across the continent! Be it a refresher or a beginner course you can find it all :))
