KFOX is gone from FM.

A station that’s been part of the Bay Area for decades has been pushed off analog FM while K-LOVE adds yet another Bay Area signal. They now have more than 20 stations covering the region.

This isn’t a knock on Christian radio. They have every right to be there.

But every time a local station disappears, we’re reminded why KPCR matters.

I also want everyone here to understand something.

Running a community radio station isn’t getting easier. It’s getting harder.

We’re under more scrutiny than ever. Music licensing organizations are paying closer attention. FCC compliance never stops. Equipment breaks. Streaming costs money. Transmitters cost money. Insurance costs money. Everything costs money.

The airwaves aren’t free, and they certainly aren’t fair.

That’s why I ask all of you to log your shows correctly. Log your volunteer hours. Help at events. Write blog posts. Record station IDs. Cover concerts. Take photos. Invite new DJs. Every little thing you do helps keep this station alive.

None of us are here because it’s easy. We’re here because we believe local, independent radio is worth protecting.

Every show you host is something a corporate station can’t replicate.

Every local artist you play.

Every event you cover.

Every listener you connect with.

That’s what makes KPCR different.

So thank you to everyone who continues to show up, put in the work, and help build something that’s becoming increasingly rare.
