KPFT HAS NEW HOME IN THE MUSEUM DISTRICT

Houston – May 18, 2022
Houston’s venerable public radio station KPFT at 90.1 on the FM dial will be celebrating its 52nd year in a new station in a central Houston location.
“There's no place like home,” announced KPFT General Manager Robert Franklin. “KPFT is moving to our new home in the heart of Houston 4504 Caroline St. We are very excited and look forward to moving into our new building and welcoming all of our programmers and community supporters back to their favorite
new community station home.”

KPFT Local Station Board Chair Sandy Weinmann recognized the dedication of the programming staff. “Over the past two years KPFT’s volunteer programmer community has worked hard to keep programming on the air without a studio. We are all grateful to move back into a studio that permits live programming.”

Pacifica National Board member Susan Young thanked all who have been a part of the effort to secure the new station. “This has been a team effort with the Pacifica national technical professional staff playing an important role in assuring that this location meets the many technical specifications that a radio station requires. And we at KPFT are grateful for the unanimous support of the Pacifica National Board to go forward buying the new home for KPFT.”

KPFT is one of five stations of the Pacifica Foundation that pioneered public radio in 1946. KPFT programming runs the gamut from local, national and international
public affairs, issue specific features and an extraordinary line up of music
programming that features many local and regional artists. Programming has been accomplished remotely due both to the pandemic and to the sale of the prior building that was in disrepair.

The new home is located in walking distance to north south transit service and east west transit service, the Houston Community College Central Campus and the new Rice innovation district called The ION.

“Your Friend and Mine” -a Celebration of Larry Winters, long-time KPFT radio host, producer of “Spare Change” every Saturday afternoon for decades.

Larry moved on to a higher frequency late last year and we are gathering the family to celebrate his life and some of his favorite music performed by a few of his favorite people.

Net proceeds from this event will benefit two 501c3 charitable organizations:

KPFT-FM 90.1
KPFT-FM 90.1, Houston’s Pacifica Radio outpost that Larry loved and served as a volunteer for nearly 40 years; particularly the “Best of Spare Change” radio show. www.kpft.org

Bundles of Hope TX, based in Spring and dedicated to expanding opportunities available to low- and moderate-income residents and their families; a group Larry cared about deeply. www.bundlesofhopetx.org

KPFT will broadcast Becoming Muslim" documentary on the following days on HD1 and HD2:
On HD1, Tuesday, April 26, 4-5 p.m., Friday, April 29, 4-5 p.m. and on HD2, Sunday, May 1, 8-9 p.m.

Becoming Muslim draws intimate portraits of each character through thoughtful and conversational journalism that allows real voices to come through — voices that are rarely heard on broadcast. Just a few of the personal observations from the documentary:

GUS GARZA, Host of Bailando en Tejas returns to KPFT, airing Tuesdays from 1-4 p.m.

Gus “Mr. Music Man” Garza - My ultimate goal is to ensure The History of Tejano Music lives on through the current listener base and the new generations that are able to hear the "Bailando en Tejas" radio show. Allowing listeners to hear the story behind the music brings education and understanding way beyond the music. Having a platform that allows me to share intimate details of the many experiences and relationships I've had the opportunity to meet & witness. It is truly an honor to be able to share my love for Tejano Music through the “Bailando en Tejas" radio show.

The love for Chicano/Tejano music started in Beeville & Corpus Christi, TX where Gus was born and raised. Having a job and at the local Tejano club, fed his love for the “ La Onda Tejana ”. Moving to Houston in 1962 and landing a job at the Pan American Night Club.
At that time, the Pan American was the only club in Houston where Chicano/Tejano artists of the Tex-Mex Genre performed live in concert regularly. Ann Keherkher, owner of the Pan American, graciously accepted me into the club to work as band (M.C.- Master of Ceremonies and at the door. Maintaining my day job and working nights and weekends at the club, I was feeding my love of music. As singer for my brother-in-law's band, the Eddie Torres Band, in 1956, I had the fortunate experience of traveling throughout Texas before settling in Houston. While with the band and upon leaving, I was able to meet big-name artists such as Balde Gonzalez, Beto Villa, Isidoro Lopez, Raph Galvan, Juan Colorado, and Wally Armendariz, just to name a few. As my passion grew and with the opportunity offered by the encouragement of General Manager of KLVL, Joe Morales, in 1968, I became the first bilingual radio disc jockey in Houston. Here was where my pen name, Mr. Music Man and "Bailando en Tejas" originated. With sponsorships of a few Tejano recording labels including: Capri Records (Dallas), Bernal Records (McAllen), Key-Loc (San Antonio), Buena Suerte (Temple), I worked at KLVL from 1968 to '71, beginning with a one-hour show Thursday, Friday, and Sa by @kpfthouston

Gospel Memories premiers December 12th on KPFT 90.1 FM Houston’s Community Station.

Gospel Memories is a weekly radio program that showcases the history of African American gospel, spiritual, and jubilee music. Catch Gospel Memories every Sunday 9 pm to 9:30 pm with an encore edition of the program airing from 9:30 to 10:00 pm on KPFT 90.1 FM.

Bob Marovich, gospel music historian, author, and Grammy-nominated album notes writer, is producer and host. He developed the program, which first aired live on Chicago’s WLUW 88.7 FM on May 6, 2001, and the first Sunday of each month thereafter, from 3:00 – 7:30 a.m. Since 2006, Gospel Memories has been a weekly one-hour live broadcast that airs Saturdays from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m.

Each week, Marovich draws from a collection of more than 20,000 individual recordings to provide listeners with a variety of classic groups, quartets, choirs, soloists, and instrumentalists—from the first known commercial recording of black sacred music (1895) to the 1980s. Gospel Memories is one of only a few, and perhaps the only, radio show in the United States to showcase such a diversity of gospel styles that span more than a century.

Artists presented on Gospel Memories include the Roberta Martin Singers, James Cleveland, the Dixie Hummingbirds, the Swan Silvertones, the First Church of Deliverance Choir, the Caravans, the Davis Sisters, the Ward Singers, the Swanee Quintet, Robert Anderson, Thomas Whitfield and Company, the Fisk University Jubilee Quartette, the Golden Gate Quartet, Mahalia Jackson, the Consolers, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, the Angelic Choir of Nutley, NJ, the Voices of Tabernacle, Andrae Crouch, and Alex Bradford. Gospel Memories also plays recordings by long-forgotten artists such as the Camp Meeting Choir, Emily Bram, the Two Gospel Keys, Rev. Benny Campbell, the Silver Stars, and R.L. Knowles.

Marovich has interviewed dozens of artists on the program, including Isaac “Dickie” Freeman (Fairfield Four), Margaret Allison (Angelic Gospel Singers), the Barrett Sisters, Etta James (on her gospel roots), and Shirley Caesar (a full list can be found on the show’s website, www.gospelmemories.com).
