POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Our latest study was published in the International Journal of Exercise Science! We surveyed 1,899 trail runners between the ages of 18-40 and our goal was to examine fueling behaviors and risk of things like Low Energy Availability and Disordered Eating to raise awareness around the importance of fueling for long term health and performance.

We found that most runners met the fueling recommendations of 30 to 60 grams of carbohydrates for training and racing lasting 1 to 2.5 hours. However, a significant portion of trail runners did not increase their carbohydrate intake and meet the recommendations for 60 to 90 grams of carbs for training runs and races lasting longer than 2.5 hours. Additionally, female runners were more likely to fuel insufficiently when compared to males and were more likely to be at risk for LEA if they did not fuel properly during their runs. Thanks to everyone that participated in this study!

Vitamin D does a lot more than support your bones. It also plays a role in muscle function, immunity, cell growth, and more.

Many athletes don’t get enough from food alone, and sunlight doesn’t always make up the difference, especially as the days get shorter.

That means a vitamin D supplement may be needed, but it isn’t a magic fix on its own. As sports dietitian @kpritchettrd explains in episode 147 of The Eat for Endurance Podcast, you have to look at the bigger nutrition picture.

Kelly and I dive deep into vitamin D, including:

👉 The best food sources (and why these alone won’t cut it)
👉 How sun exposure, season, skin tone, age, and more affect your levels
👉 When to get tested and how to make sense of your results
👉 How much to supplement based on your labs
👉 What the research says about vitamin D, illness, and performance

‼️ New Research Alert ‼️

I’m so excited to share our latest study examining 325 female CrossFit® and CrossFit®+endurance athletes (ages 18–65, avg. 33) — one of the first to explore how a muscularity-oriented culture impacts fueling, body image, exercise dependence, and DE risk.

We found some of the highest mean exercise dependence scores reported to date — even compared to endurance athletes — and DE prevalence (37.2%) was strikingly similar to what’s been documented in endurance sport research.

There is still so much to learn about how strength-based, physique-driven environments shape athlete health… and this study helps move that conversation forward. 💪📊✨
