New materials for a new world
tactility, innovation and the future of design

You may have noticed that there are more and more tactile and innovative materials in the design.

We decided to look at this trend from two sides.

I’ll show you how materials, colors, and textures shape the user experience.

I’ll tell you about the cultural changes that are behind these design decisions.

Tactility as a user experience

Modern research in the field of neuroscience proves that tactile contact activates areas of the brain associated with pleasure and emotional memory much more than just visual perception.

That is why even the largest brands, despite the rapid digitalization, cannot ignore the tactile experience of their consumers - this can be understood by looking at the brand stands at the annual design exhibitions.

Material as a territory of innovation

The unique material transforms the product from the category of “product” to the category of “design object”. Development is expensive, but the finished product with this material sells itself (like Nike Joyride foam or Adidas Boost cushioning).

Now the textile market is gradually moving out of the 2D category, not just due to accessories and decor - companies such as JDD Labs are introducing 3D printing on textiles, making the volume part of the fabric.

It seems that such materials will not only become part of the catwalk collections, but will also gradually transfer to children’s institutions, hospices, rehabilitation centers, helping people to improve their psychomotor development and reduce anxiety.

Why are brands investing in new materials?

Remember the Adidas sneakers made from ocean debris in collaboration with Parley - then the material became the brand’s hero, creating emotional involvement in the topic of ecology.

Adidas seasoned it with a viscous, repeating wave shape, hence a new story was born through the material - about helping the oceanic ecosystem.
