The DJ booth doesn't need you anymore... or does it? 🎧

29 years in the game, and @kratedigga is dropping game on what actually separates a real DJ from a machine. Beat-matching? The computer can do that now. What can't it do? THAT'S the conversation. Let us know in the comments. 👀

This is a clip from our new two-part episode built around @theummahcreativegroup's doc "The Krate Doc" — going behind the turntables AND behind the camera with director @therealdominiclawson and DJ legend Krate Digga.

"We're having five different arguments about five different things but the only thing in common is we're using the same words." - Krate Digga 🎧

Should we gatekeep DJing? Krate Digga says no, but the real issue isn't gatekeeping, it's context. He breaks it down like basketball: NBA, WNBA, college ball, and the Harlem Globetrotters are all "basketball," but you can't critique one using the rules of another. Same goes for DJing. Hip-hop DJ culture, wedding DJing, and someone spinning off a laptop at a house party are not the same conversation, even when we use the same word to describe all of it.

His bigger point? Understand the why before you judge the how. Some people grew up inside the culture. Some picked up a controller to pay tuition. Neither is wrong, they're just different.

Full conversation with @kratedigga and filmmaker @therealdominiclawson on the @theummahcreativegroup documentary 'The Krate Doc' is live now on Queue Points. Link in bio. 🎙️

Do you think DJing needs more gatekeeping, or is Krate right that it's really a language problem? Tell us below 👇

Think DJing is just lining up songs? It's intense mental engagement. Like someone interrupting your flow mid-thought. Requests can disrupt the entire process.

Thank you for watching.

I just wanted to take a moment to say thank you to everyone who took the time to watch the documentary, share it, send a message, or simply let me know that something resonated with you.

Being part of this project was an experience I’m genuinely grateful for. It’s always interesting to see how the things we’re doing in the moment can become part of a larger story.

Appreciate the filmmaker, @therealdominiclawson, and @theummahcreativegroup for creating the space, along with everybody who continues to support the work.

More to come. ✊🏾
