My toxic trait? I thought I could do a triathlon without ever training for it.

At 13, I was completely immersed in sports. A deviated septum made everything difficult for me. But it didn’t matter. The water, the court, the track were the places where I felt at peace. I was desperately trying to reach the nationals in badminton, giving it my all. At 16, everything was gone. No support, no facilities. No one came forward for me, so I had to walk away from the one thing that mattered to me.

Four years passed. I became many other things. A filmmaker, an artist, an engineering student pursuing an internship I never wanted, and grades I didn’t care about.

This month broke me in a way I can’t fully describe. I needed an escape so badly that I took part in a triathlon. Never had trained for it. Never even ran a marathon. I just thought I’d handle it like always.

But I couldn’t. As I swam, my body gave out, every breath was a struggle. Made me remember everything…
That 16 y/o who had to give up.
The years of strength that slowly, were lost.
The feeling of being so capable at one point and not knowing where that person went.

I almost cried in the open water.
But I didn’t stop.

When I crossed the finish line and grabbed that medal, everything went silent.
It felt like it was just that 20 y/o who was gasping for breath and that 16 y/o boy who never got his moment.
