A small find from the bookshelves at home today and a survival from another age of music preparation. The Art of Music Engraving & Processing by Ted Ross - something I printed out from a CD-ROM many years ago and had almost forgotten I owned - is a wonderful reminder of what music engraving once actually meant: copper or pewter plates, punches, gravers, burnishers, hand-cut stems and slurs, and eventually the marvellous Musicwriter typewriter (people of a certain age will know of this). If moving a note a fraction to the left with a mouse is annoying, the physical craft involved here is rather humbling. Towards the back of the book, a practical section on editing and proofreading, including a checklist that remains rather useful: notes, clefs, key and time signatures, tempo marks, ties and slurs, vertical alignment, dynamics, bar counts, credits, lyrics. While technology has changed, the business of checking a score properly hasn’t. 🎼🎵 #musiccopying #engraving #preparation by @krhes68

A lovely lawn labyrinth at Burghley House — not the circuit walls but Ariadne’s thread being the path to tread. Though perhaps more properly a processional labyrinth than a conventional unicursal one: there are to two paths through it, with no single defined entrance or route to the centre. Dress rehearsal this morning with the National Youth Wind Orchestra ahead of today’s UK premiere of A Pageant of Figures and Passing Bells. Wonderful to hear the piece taking shape in the hall, and very grateful to Dr. Matthew George and the young musicians of the NYWO for all their work. I see that Masque will be performed this evening by "The President's Own" United States Marine Band on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol, Washington, D.C. (it popped up on my feed). I wrote Masque 40 years ago (!), so it's a particular pleasure to see it continuing its journey with such a distinguished ensemble. It's a piece that has steadfastly refused to disappear! Time to head home after an immensely rewarding few days at the Bowdoin International Music Festival. Congratulations to all the composers featured in tonight’s collaboration with the Bowdoin College Museum of Art. It was a fascinating evening, and I was struck by the imagination and individuality of the musical responses to the chosen artworks. The museum’s superb collection offered such rich stimuli, making for a wonderful concert. Further thanks to the museum of art for their excellent tour before the concert. My nan, Muriel McMahon, would have been 100 today. She died in 2015. This is us, in a photo booth in St John’s market, Liverpool, in 1974. She was the kindest, most generous, and most loving person I have ever known. Her unwavering support, encouragement and belief in me helped shape who I am.
