Spelman…How do I begin to thank an institution that did more than educate me, but also molded me?

I came to you as a girl from Brooklyn, the daughter of Trinidadian immigrants who sacrificed everything so I could have more. I arrived as the youngest of three and the only girl, carrying expectations and quiet determination. A first-generation graduate.

Loving you wasn’t always easy. I was stretched, challenged, and unsure if I belonged. I stayed, I prayed, I pushed, and through the long nights, tears, laughter, and faith, I found HER.

I found my strength. My voice. My purpose.

You taught me how to stand, lead, and walk into rooms I once thought I didn’t belong in. What once felt impossible is now my reality. And I know this was never just me…it was always God.

My parents have been my foundation; every step I’ve taken is rooted in their sacrifice and love.

So thank you, Spelman, for stretching me, holding me, and seeing me even when I was still learning to see myself. Thank you for becoming part of my story, a chapter that will live in me forever.

I came to you as a Spelmanite.
I leave you now as a Spelman Woman.
